Chapter 27- One Day More

Izzy POV

'Meet me in a week at the place where everything began. Come and find your beloved brother, where love became forbidden and enemies became family.'

"One day," I break the ear-piercing silence that was stretching out in the library between Alec, Magnus and myself. Alec had been released from the infirmary- by Magnus, of course- after it only took an hour or so to remove the block from his mind. Magnus told me that the block wasn't intended to be permanent which either meant one of two things: their side wasn't powerful enough to place a strong block or they had intended for Alec to die. I'm putting my money on the second one; and that really worries me. "We have one day left until we have to meet the owner of the voice."

"We should inform the Clave," Alec demands, standing up and walking over to the doors of the library. "They could be able to do something."

"Do what exactly, Alec? We have no information; they'd just laugh in our faces when we tell them that there was an intruder in your mind who told us to meet him. Only, we don't know who we're meeting or where we're meeting them. The only proof they have is a stupid riddle. Do you really think the Clave would waste their resources on something as stupid as this?" I argue.

"We can't just do nothing, Iz. This is insanity! Our brother is missing and you refuse to get help from the only people who can help!"

"Your sister is right, Alexander," Magnus cuts in, striding over to Alec and taking a hold of his hands. "I have known the way of the clave for hundreds of years: they won't send aid without evidence."

"Didn't mom go to the Clave? It sounds like something she's do," Alec tries to reason with me.

Magnus sighs, "Mayrse hasn't been the same since Max died, Alexander. If she hasn't told the Clave by now, I doubt she will. She was gone before I came to aid you, that's plenty time for the Clave to confront us."

"I won't be ridiculed by the Clave again, Alec," I shake me my head in determination. The Clave sees us as children who are playing adults but they don't understand that we might as well be adults for all of the weight placed upon us. I had seen scenes of death and destruction for most of my life; it's all I've even known. "We've managed without their aid before."

At that both Magnus and Alec look up at me in shock that matches my own. What had I meant? We've always abided by the Clave's law and done as we were told... haven't we?

"What are you talking about, Isabelle?" Alec says, completely dumbstruck.

No, we haven't abided by the Clave's laws; something big and important that completely threw our lives off track.

"I don't know," my mind spirals out of control, spluttering out utter nonsense. "Something about a girl with fiery red hair and an important name in the shadow world. Why can't I remember?"

As I grunt in frustration, and flop down in a heap onto the armchair, Alec looks at me in concern, "The girl must be that Clary. You know, the new girl at school. It might have just been a dream, Iz; Magnus tells me you've not been sleeping properly. Maybe this is just because you're sleep deprived."

I ignore the rest of what he's said and just zone out, my hands braced on both sides of my head trying to stop the spinning of my mind, "Yes! Clary Fray... But it's not Fray. Her name it... it's dangerous."

"Iz," Alec tries in a soothing voice crouched down next to my feet with Magnus looking curiously on. "Just breathe."

Suddenly, I can see clearly -as if a fog had been clouding my vision and I hadn't noticed until it had gone. I jump up in realisation as it hits me: "Morgenstern. Clarissa Morgenstern; daughter of Valentine." I almost don't notice Alec involuntarily flinch at the venomous name; his blue eyes telling me that I'm crazy. And maybe I am, but everything starts falling into place and making sense.

"There was a pack of cards with paintings on each of them, one of which was The Mortal Cup. Clary could pull the Cup out of the card as it had been hidden in there or something. Valentine was back and he wanted to create an army of some sort using Clary, his daughter, and Jace, his..." I can't finish the thought as in my head, burning scenery appeared: an ashen manor atop a hill. My eyes dart around the room like I'm trying to put together an invisible puzzle.

"Isabelle, what are you talking about? Valentine's dead and has been for over a decade: he and his son died in a fire; he never had a daughter."

Alec is becoming distressed now, but Magnus is just in disbelief: "How do you know about Clary? She is protected from the shadow world. She-"

I snapped my head up towards him and raised my eyebrows in question. "That's right; Jocelyn made you put a block on her mind to protect her."

Magnus nodded grimly, "I always told Jocelyn that Clary had to find out the truth, someday."

"Hold on a minute," Alec cries, standing up and holding his arms up in a T shape. "Time out. What's going on here?"

"I'm not sure," I admit, taking my brothers hands and looking him in the eye. "But I think... I think I know where the voice wants us to meet him."

"Where?" Alec asks simply.

"Renwick's ruin."
