prologue.

40 years earlier.

The weather was gloomy, rain was coming down hard. It was a normal day in the 1st Ward. But it wasn't a good day for someone.

A woman, middle aged, and beautiful, was running across the street. She was carrying a baby not even 6 months old. She looked like she was a dear in the headlights, and in fear.
"STOP THAT WOMAN, SHE IS CARRYING A GHOUL BABY!" an ghoul investigator shouted to his comrades. Two investigators were already running out of breath, but weren't giving up. At the last second, WOOSH, they used a quinque to subdue the woman, but unknowingly killed her in the process. The newborn started howling and crying, due to the mother falling due to the slash. The investigators left the baby on the street, because if it was a human baby, they would've taken it in. The cries go on into the night.

At the Washuu Estate, thirteen year old Hayase Washuu was studying for an upcoming exam at school during that fateful night. He was used to staying up, but always wanted to play a video game or have fun, but he was raised to be an ghoul investigator, something he found rather boring. He stood out in his family, who were known to be cold, and very serious, but he was charming, playful, and creative. He was the only child to be a half-human, while his brothers were ghouls. He wasn't really like them, always wanted to go out and meet people, instead of being at the Garden. But he found love in the flowers that he grew. That quiet night turned into a loud one, as soon as he heard the knock. He then saw his old brother, Yoshitoki, came in to distract him. He looked distraught, but hid it from his youthful brother.
" Studying for that exam, make sure you pass it and I'll get you something." Yoshitoki told him. "I'm already smart, big bro." Hayase replied.
"But still, I'll reward you with something if you try."
"Really?!" He perked up in excitement. "I want a new video game and some markers!"
"Alright, kid."

When he was eighteen, he officially became a ghoul investigator. He was ready to live on his own and start his own path for himself, which he was waiting for years for. He moved into an expensive apartment building near the 1st ward branch office, so he can just walk to work. When he was moving in he heard a bit of a commotion from the halls. He sees a pretty woman, probably around twenty , talking to someone that is her brother or fiance. That was Itsuki Marude, an investigator at the CCG.
"Don't disturb the new neighbor, Risako, that's one of my new colleagues, he is very high on himself and is a big of a loud one." Marude exclaimed. Risako, coming out of the apartment, looked a bit dainty. She had long black hair, and was tall and slim. She looks like she could be a model. She was Marude's older sister by two years.
" I want you to meet my sister, Risako, she's a year older than you." Marude said. They both shook hands.

Over the few days they started to get to know each other more since they both are neighbors, and Hayase started to fall for her. She was becoming a teacher in the 20th Ward, so she stayed with her brother so she doesn't waste her scholarship money. She was a loud but lovely lady, and loves to go to parties. She always wanted to be a teacher. They fell in love pretty quickly behind the Washuu's back, since she was a human and they wanted a female ghoul for him. They disobeyed and got married and had children. They had a boy, named Haruki Washuu, a full human, and the eldest. After this, they moved and Hayase changed his last name and distanced himself. Five years later, when they were 30, a little girl, her name was Reina. She was different than her brother, since she got her father's genes, and is a half human, which was very rare. When she was three, Hayase died. It hit her mother hard, so they moved around again, and Risako began teaching at Kamii University, to get away from the Washuu Clan. She fell into a deep depression. She despised what they had done to Hayase. She was never the same again.

When Rei and Haruki were young, Haruki and the little one used to sneak into forests to shoot cans with bb guns for fun on weekends or after school some days. Rei was an energetic and kind girl, while Haruki was more relaxed, but always cared for his family. His father left his old bb guns to Haruki. Life was good, until the accident.

A tragic car accident happened when Rei was around 13, killing her mother, and leaving her and her brother orphaned. She and her brother needed new internal organs, and was treated at Kanou General Hospital. When she woke up, her life had changed. She became a full fledged one eyed ghoul, given the organs of a ghoul named Rize, but her brother seemingly died in surgery. She fled the hospital during night, and thought she was going to die and be alone. However, a woman in bandages said she will help her. But after the 11th Ward Battle, she met the man who helped her, who said her brother died. She was then used as an experiment behind the works, altering her kakuhou to see if there could be changes to it. During the Owl Suppression Operation arc, she was rescued and found out to be Itsuki Marude's niece.

She was then granted by Tsuneyoshi Washuu to become an investigator at the age of 15, almost 16. By the time she was almost 17, she was already a Rank 1 Investigator. During the Dragon War, she helped fought against a hungry Shikorae, and successfully defeated him, immediately reuniting with her uncle who she presumed that he died. After the War, she joined the TSC in hoping to help out more, and was introduced to Hideyoshi Nagachika. She was given her own squad, that Marude granted her so that they can become the next Suzuya Squad if anything has happened. Now, 22 years old, is an Associate Special Peacekeeper at the TSC.
