-31- Lost in thought Part 2
ZHAN'S POV
I wrote a message to some friends, but they either wrote that they might watch or they didn't react at all. And then I called my sister.
My big sister who I love very much said something like: "I am glad that you have a gig tonight. But unfortunately I won't have time to watch it because I am travelling with my boyfriend. In two hours we are going to the airport. Better don't call mom and dad, they are mad again because you prefer to pursue your hobby rather than to study seriously. Little brother, I advise you to come home soon and face our parents. You can't run away forever. You will soon be 19 years old and you should act like that. Come home, little brother."
And if you think that's not so great, you should imagine my parents to be even more crass. I phone them twice a week and both times I hear the following.
"Zhan, you're an adult now and you need to stop chasing your dreams and face up to reality. We know you love singing, but what if you're not hip anymore and you're not making money? Who will hire you without a proper education? When will you finally understand that life doesn't always go the way you want it to? And you should also start getting ready to face the agreement. Until you turn 20, there's not much time left. And even if you can't remember when you made this agreement, it still holds! There is no way around it. Stop daydreaming and face the hard reality. Start sorting your life out!"
That's what my parents call loving advice. I don't know how they can consider this loving. It's hard for me to hear my parents say that every time I talk to them.
But my parents were not always like that. I remember what they were like before they took over the management of the biotech company. They were fine in the beginning, but little by little they changed.
They were overwhelmed. Their jobs running the company, their work in the labs and us kids. And because they were overwhelmed, especially with us children, we often had to go to our grandmother and stay with her.
At some point I thought that soon we would have to stay with her completely. But then my grandfather died of heart failure and my grandmother could not take us with her so often.
My sister is two years older than me and she always had to take care of me when we couldn't go to our grandma.
But one day my sister got fed up and ran away from home. She hid at her best friend's house for two weeks before she came back home.
And she only came back because my parents understood what was bothering her and from then on I had to take care of myself. You couldn't call it family anymore, because everyone only cared about himself.
I had just turned 16 when I told my parents I wanted to become a singer. My father laughed heartily and said it was a good joke. But I remained stubborn and a few weeks later my parents allowed me to pursue my hobby as long as my grades at school didn't suffer.
So I gave everything, for school and for the talent show. And I won! For the first time in my life I won something and it was with what I love to do most. Singing!
My parents said: "I hope you don't think you can forget about school because of this."
Well, it doesn't matter. Let's get back to the here and now.
The show starts in less than an hour and in order to prepare and calm down, we quietly sing a bit in our room. Wu Jiacheng is sitting to my right and is beaming at me. And to my left is Zhao Lei, he looks at me questioningly and asks me if we can talk alone for a moment.
So I go with him into the hallway and on to an empty room when he asks me if everything is all right with me.
"Sure, why do you ask?" I want to know from him.
"I find you look very pale and absent all the time. If it has anything to do with Yibo, try to resolve it now or after the show. But please try to hide it during the show."
"It has nothing to do with Yibo. All I was thinking about was my family and I got lost in the thought. So don't panic, I'm here and I'll do my best." I smile to convince him.
He nods and we fool around a little before we go back to our room.
I had not been in the room for five minutes when my cell phone rang. My father called me. "Son, whatever you do, drop everything and come to the hospital. Your sister's been in a car accident."
The phone almost fell out of my hand in fright. I told my manager and she called me a cab. "We'll manage it without you tonight. "Go to the hospital, see your family. We'll pray for your sister."
I took my bag and my manager accompanied me outside. We met Yibo in the corridor and he asked me what was going on. "Not Yibo now." Said my manager and took me outside where the taxi was already waiting.
When I arrived at the hospital, I immediately ran to the elevator and went to the second floor where my parents were standing in front of a room waiting. When they saw me, they took me in their arms. "She and her boyfriend were in a taxi on their way to the airport when there was an accident." My father said after I asked him what happened.
We sat outside the room for an hour when a doctor came out and said it was half so bad. She had a broken arm, a mild concussion and some bruising.
Her boyfriend was fine so far. He had a head laceration and a broken wrist.
"We just saw a car coming towards us from the right side of a side street and just a moment later the car slammed into us. Afterwards it got dark and I woke up in the hospital." My sister told us.
She was shaking all over her body and the doctor said it came from the shock. "What about your performance?" She asked me.
"Um, I preferred coming here. Family is more important." I said, and my parents looked at me questioningly.
" Performance? Is the show still on? Isn't the competition over?" My father asked.
I shook my head and said, "There are two more shows after today."
"Then you can resume your studies soon. It's about time." So my mother says.
I try to explain to her that I'm still in the music group and have performances with them. But she just shook her head and skillfully ignored my explanations. So everything as usual.
My father looks at me and asks: "When will you finally grow up? It's only a year and two months away from the date, don't think we'll give in and forget the agreement."
My sister had an accident, she is lying next to my parents in a hospital bed and is injured, but again it's all about this stupid agreement that I don't remember that I made it.
