Nora walked in balancing pizza on one hand and burger on the other. "Ain't you the best." Jade said smiling. Nora rolled her eyes knowing her best friend too well. They had been best of friends since their teen years and Jade was the only close person to her.
Nora watched as her best friend helped her. She was glowing and in no time the baby would arrive.
" How was work dear?" Jade asked as she looked for glasses to pour them lemonade juice.
"As usual. Another kidnapping case has presented itself." Nora answered with a smirk.
"Your favourite." Jade laughed.
"Not my favorite but I just hate creeps who pounce on unsuspecting little girls and boys just to pawn them off as prostitute or harvest their organs." Nora said with menace.
Jade knew her too well to know that Nora does not back down from a case but this one felt different.
Jade had been her best friend since their teenage years and through college. She knew Nora as quiet and reserved but extremely cold towards affection. Nora thought vulnerability was more of a weakness than strength and that is why Nora never showed any form of weakness. She was sharp, bold and beautiful yet she could not bring herself to accept compliments.
"Now, tell me when are you going to see your mother?" Jade probed
"Hopefully soon." Nora said curtly as if saying hopefully never! As she sipped her lemonade.
Jade let the silence hang lightly and thinking of all the things she wanted to tell Nora to shake her up from the cocoon she had built around herself.
Nora did not have a cordial relationship with her mother,Belinda but after she left home she never returned to even say ' hello'.
"When is your husband coming back?." Nora interrupted her dark thoughts.
"Ooh! I miss him so much but i think this week. I am not sure." Jade said with what seemed to be longing in her eyes.
"I want him to be here for us. This is not our first baby and I am not sure I want to be alone during this period and also during delivery." She continued explaining herself a habit she had especially those moments her emotions get out of hand.
Nora placed her hand on top of hers "You can count on me." She offered. Jade smiled and hugged her just to remind Nora that she was more than a friend, she was her family too.
"I have been praying for you Nora and I know in due time God will answer my prayers." Jade said gently.
Nora remained blank, "God?" She almost laughed.
"Yes God! I know You and Him do not have a relationship but He is real." Jade said with a gentle smile.
Nora chewed her cheek in contemplation. She wondered if the ever supreme being cared at all. If He created the world and left it in chaos and horror.
She once believed that when she was a little girl compared to now grown and faced with reality of a crazy and evil world,Nora could not say if indeed God was all too powerful.
"It is okay Nora, God has promised to hear even our slightest prayer maybe it be painful tears or joyful praise. He cares." Jade spoke as if she could read her mind.
"Honestly I do not know."she replied too fast than she opted.
A few minutes passed and Jade stood to clean the kitchen counter.
"I almost forgot, mum says she wants to see you because it seems you are excellent at evading those that love you. Her words not mine." Jade said all too defensively.
Nora laughed " That's why i avoid her, she is too blunt and honest."
"Something you share in common." Jade replied.
"No! I don't think so." Nora said with a deep frown.
" Suit yourself be..." she was cut by the intruder.
"Honey!!" She shrieked as she dropped the kitchen cloth and ran towards the subject of intrusion.
"Hello my love?" Her husband responded lovingly. He dropped his bag to hug Jade.
They stood there for a few seconds as he kissed her and released a breath maybe he had been holding.
"You are home early." She gazed adoringly.
" They let me go early because my boss knows I am going to be a father soon." He said as he brushed her stray braids.
"Awww! I had missed you like crazy but I thank God you are here." She cooed as some tears escaped her beautiful eyes.
He held her for sometime and then finally noticed the other specimen in the room.
"Hello Nora bear." He called jokingly.
"I still have my gun." She replied with a weak smile.
"Aha! I forgot. Don't shoot." He held his hand up mockingly.
She laughed at his stupid banter. "Hello to you too Rick." She answered as he gave her palm a high five.
Jade was busy watching him with love and affection trying not to let him go.
"Now that you have company, I have to take my leave." She said as she picked her phone and car keys.
"You know there is a guest room." Jade offered.
"Uurgh! Too much sweetness, I might become diabetic." Nora left after saying goodbyes .
