"Wait! The book... the one about the er— oh, what was it called? Hippygroffs! You left your hippygroff book back at the hotel! We don't have much time, but if we hurr—"
"Mom!" Evelyn shouted, knocking her, obviously very overwhelmed, mother out of her state of panic, for what felt like the hundredth time that morning. The lady had spent the whole commute to King's Cross randomly yelling out items that she insisted Evelyn had forgotten to pack, all of which upon searching had been found tucked safely in the girl's trunk. This time was no different. "First off, they're called hippogriffs, secondly, the book is right here." she finished, pulling out the textbook she had purchased at Diagon Alley the day prior.
"Oh, good. That would have been a nightmare, it's already-" her mother stalled, taking a quick look at the watch that lay on her right wrist. "10:54! Evelyn, you only have six minutes to get on the train! You need to hurry or you'll be late! Come here, sweetie!"
Before she could react, Evelyn was pulled into an unintentionally violent hug by her frazzled mother. She was being squeezed so hard she felt like she was going to pop, but for a few seconds, she just let her mom have her moment.
Parting was always hard for the two of them when the school year came around. Evelyn was close with her mother, and not being able to see her for long periods of time was hard on the pair. Of course, it was also tough leaving her dad, as well as Hannah, who was currently back at the hotel and had already said her goodbyes to her sister, but Evelyn's mother, who understood the shy, anxious girl more than anyone else, was by far the most difficult goodbye.
"Hey- uh, mom. I love you, and I'm gonna miss you so much, but if you want me to, you know... make it to the train on time, you're gonna have to let me go." Evelyn muttered, not wanting to ruin the moment, yet eager to make her way onto platform 9 and 3/4.
Her mother pried herself away from the hug, wiping a stray tear off of her cheek.
"Right, you should be off," she spoke softly, letting go of the grip she had on her daughter's shoulder. "Oh, I'm going to miss you so much, Ev! I'm so proud of you for having the courage to do this. I understand it wasn't an easy choice for you, but I know you're gonna do great things at Hogwarts! I love you so much, sweetheart!" The tears were now flowing freely down her face as she looked at her youngest daughter with pride.
Evelyn, holding back tears herself, gripped the handle of the cart that was carrying her trunk and owl, Nova.
There was no more stalling. It was time.
"Bye, Momma!" the girl said, starting toward the brick wall just between platforms nine and ten.
"Goodbye, Ev!"
And, with one final glance at her mother, Evelyn did exactly what she had been advised to do by a Hogwarts parent who they spoke to about ten minutes before.
