Evelyn had never remembered a time that she had felt disappointed to see Sirius. She hated dreaming when the boy was not there, and when he was, she soaked up all the time she could get with him, for it never seemed to be enough.
However, tonight when Evelyn found herself faced with the clothed back of her best friend, she wished that he would not turn around. She did not want to see his handsome face or the cheeky grin that he often wore. She did not want him to take back the words he said when they were awake, because, perhaps, that was truly how he felt about her. She would rather be hurt by the truth than coddled by lies.
Sirius could sense Evelyn's presence behind him, but kept his eyes facing the night sky that surrounded him, fresh air blowing his long hair out of his face.
He could not bring himself to look at his best friend, for he did not feel he could face the shame of seeing her upset because of something he did. In his dreams, the last thing he would ever want to do is hurt Evelyn and not even twenty-four hours into knowing her in real life, he had already managed to do just that.
The worst part was that he did not even understand why he had said those things to her. He could not fathom why his real-life self was not mesmerized by the witty, kind girl just like his dream self was. Usually in his dreams, he was able to remember everything from his real-life, but tonight, he could only remember the events of the day, not what was going through his mind when it happened, which frustrated him to no end.
Nothing seemed to make sense.
But Sirius did know one thing: the situation was not going to be fixed by simply ignoring it, so, with hesitation, the boy forced his body to turn unwillingly in the direction of Evelyn.
She stood motionless, her face seeming to not be holding any emotion at all.
Sirius wanted nothing more than to run to Evelyn, wrap her up in his arms, and flood her ears with apologies until she forgave him.
Instead, he just stood there, staring at her deep, blue eyes, wishing he could take back everything he had said and done.
"Where are we?" Evelyn asked, her voice startling Sirius, who was not expecting her to speak first.
Sirius looked around the unenclosed, concrete room. The clear, night sky was surrounding the pair as the wind blew quietly past them.
"Astronomy tower," he answered shortly, still unsure of her current emotions toward him.
Evelyn simply nodded before walking over to the railing next to Sirius and focusing her gaze on the starry sky.
"Why are we here?" Evelyn asked. "I can't imagine the astronomy tower being a popular spot for you, you know, with your family's thing for stars."
