Ryan fluttered his eyes open and the sun shined in his face. He raised his hand and tried to protect his eyes from the sun, but it shone within his fingers. He rolled over to his side and saw a familiar face. His co-host was sleeping peacefully.
"Shane?" Ryan asked. "SHANE!" Ryan wasn't going to wait for his friend. He shook him awake and Shane woke with a gasp. He looked around and quickly saw Ryan. Shane then looked at the floor and all their surroundings.
"Where the hell are we?" He asks. Shane stands up. Ryan sits up and looks around. They're on a grassy hill and the sky is a dark blue with gray cloudy skies above them. There are flowers blooming here and there. Ryan stands up too.
"No idea." He says. Ryan notices Shane staring at something over the rolling hill. Ryan walks beside his friend. "What are you looking at?" He asks. Shane says nothing, knowing Ryan already sees it. It's a small town. It looks like an old town.
"What the hell?" Ryan asked, not really expecting an answer. Shane shrugged and started to walk down the hill. Ryan was soon worked up. "Where the hell are you going!?" He screamed.
"Well, it's a town, and a town has got to have some answers since it's full of people," Shane said. He stopped and turned to Ryan. "You coming?" He asked. Ryan looked around for some excuse as to why he shouldn't but couldn't find one. He groaned and ran down after his friend. Because of all people he knew, Shane was the only one who'd enter a town with no prior knowledge as to how he got there.
"Wait up!" He said. Shane smiled and waited for his friend to follow him. They arrived in the town and realized people were dressed a little differently than they were. There were a few women out and about. They wore long dresses of all colors, their hair in buns on the back of their heads. Some girls gripped umbrellas that laid on their shoulders. Some wore hats with flowers in them. There were children too. The girls wore dresses too, but they only went down to the knees. Their hair was cut short, to the chin mostly. Some were in bob's and some were curled at the bottom.
The men were more common around the town. They wore bland colored hats and black coats. Some coats were brown or tan. Their pants would match their coats. Some had canes and some had mustaches. Their shoes were shiny and black. They wore ties of all colors and appeared to be gentlemen.
Ryan and Shane walked down the sidewalk looking at the men and women, and they stared back at them. They were confused with their clothing and some gave Ryan suspicious looks. Ryan covered his face a bit, a little upset and ashamed. Shane pulled Ryan into a dark hallway.
"Looks like we're not in Kansas anymore." Shane joked but looking at the crowd. Ryan knew this was a joke, as they weren't originally in Kansas. Yet the tone wasn't needed right now nor was he in the mood.
"Shut up, Shane. We're not in our apartments!" Ryan says. Shane knows this but says nothing. He realizes he still has his hands on Ryan's shoulders and quickly removes them. Ryan's face goes a little red, confused as to why he held on for so long.
"Hold on," Ryan said. He went out and looked in a trash can. It had the newspaper for today. He took it out and ran back to Shane. Shane took one end of it, Ryan taking the other.
"What? What is it?" Shane asks. Ryan points to the date.
"August 10, 1912. Memphis, Tennesse!" Ryan says out loud. Shane's mouth opens wide, just as shocked as Ryan is.
"WE'RE IN 1912!" Shane yells. He appeared to be more excited than disappointed.
Ryan takes the paper and rereads it. He can't believe his eyes and ears.
"Shane, we're not at home! We're not in our year anymore! How did we do this!?" Ryan asks, yelling.
"Let's focus on blending in at the moment, instead. We'll get more answers the less conspicuous we look." Shane says. Ryan looks at the wall in front of them.
"Do you think we were sent here for a reason?" Ryan asks, folding the paper back up. He looks like he's in a trance.
"What?" Shane asks, calmly.
"Remember? We covered this unsolved murder once! No one knows who it is! Today's the day of the first murder. We know where it's gonna be! We can catch him and it'll be a solved crime in the future!" Ryan says, happily. He looks at Shane and smiles.
"We shouldn't mess with the past, Ryan." Shane tries to reason.
"You're right too, you know." Ryan points out, ignoring Shane's comment.
"Which part? I hope you mean both of them." He remarkes.
"We need to blend in," Ryan says. He walks away, Shane reluctantly following. Ryan throws away the paper and looks for the nearest clothing shop. "Here." He says, walking in. Shane follows. They quickly find clothes that best suit the era, put them on, and pay. The person at the counter is amazed by how much money they have, and the boys smile awkwardly. They leave the place and look around the town a bit. Ryan wears a coat, gray pants, black shoes, and a tie with a white shirt. Shane wears a similar thing but with a belt around his coat and is wearing a fedora.
"We need to find a place to sleep as well, Ryan," Shane says, calm. The boys walk down the street.
"No," Ryan says. "We need to find the place of the first murder." He says. Shane stops Ryan.
"We can't. I mean, if we do...the murder won't be a murder at all and there won't be anything to solve. The murderer has to strike at least two or three times and not get caught before we do anything. Remember?" Shane says. Ryan is amazed. He doesn't even remember covering that.
"Yeah, I guess so." Ryan asks.
"What's the matter?" Shane stops them. Ryan thinks for a minute, entranced in his own thoughts.
"What about all those people? They're gonna die." Ryan says.
"They have to. They're gonna die anyway it'll just be sooner than they expected." Shane chuckled. Ryan seemed to be taken off guard by this, making his friend stop.
Ryan sighed, giving in.
"Fine. We'll find someplace to sleep." Ryan said. He didn't think twice about Shane's responses.
Shane followed Ryan to a nearby hotel and decided to stay there. It was nice for that era and there were two beds instead of one. Somewhere in Shane was a disappointment, but somewhere else was a relief.
