It's three days later and the murderer has already struck. Ryan is worried about the people getting killed while Shane has been more focused on what's going on currently and how to get home. He realized they don't have their phones, no way of contacting their families (since they aren't alive yet) and they don't even know how they got here in the first place.
"I can't take this anymore!" Ryan exclaimed as they sit across from each other at a table in the park. Shane looks at Ryan confused.
"Can't take what?" He asks.
"We don't know where exactly the murder is taking place this time, but we do know that it's going to be very close to the middle of the town," Ryan says. "I want to solve this murder, and although I won't get any credit, at least it's another case solved."
Shane sighed. "When do we go? Where? What do we do? What do we do while we wait? You gotta figure this out, man. You gotta think ahead." Shane says. Ryan noticed he's been a little more serious than usual lately, even so as to not make jokes. He hasn't made one since his "looks like we're not in Kansas anymore".
"Are you okay?" Ryan asks, concerned.
"This isn't about me, this about solving the case and going home," Shane remarks. Ryan sighs, now knowing something really is wrong. Shane stands up and picks up a ball. He throws it to a child and he catches it. Shane then sits back down, rests his arm on the table and sighs.
A little domestic thought pops into Ryan's mind. He smiled at it. In a way where he knows he's being ridiculous and it's just those silly little thoughts people get when they love someone. There's been various instances where Ryan's thought things maybe he shouldn't, to thoughts that were so harmless he'd say them. This was a thought he'd keep to himself, however.
"Okay, on a serious note," Ryan interjected, suddenly gaining awareness again. "I think we should lurk in a hallway and wait for a scream or some sort of call that indicates someone is in trouble." Shane nods.
"I agree."
"Let's do it," Ryan says. He gets up and Shane follows him.
As Shane stands, he reminds himself of his situation. He's not here to appear vulnerable. Hell, he's never appeared that way and he certainly isn't starting now. Especially for some mortal. Besides the point, he's here to go home. The sooner he goes home, the more sleep he'll get at night knowing Ryan's safe and that Shane's secret won't get out.
Besides, Shane's been in 1912 before. This can't be bad.
...
They wait in the dark alleyway near a corner and the suspected house that the murder takes place. Ryan sighs while Shane remains quiet. They are sick of waiting. Bored wasn't a strong enough word.
"How did people pass the time back in these days?" Shane asks, a sly smirk spreading through his face. He knows the answer, having been in this time period before, but he's fooled the world on it.
Shane stands with his hands in his pockets. Ryan leans against the wall, arms crossed and smiling. He chuckles.
"I don't know. Think they played games or something?" Ryan says. Shane shrugs.
"We can't play games here, Ryan. There's nothing to play with." Shane says, smiling vaguely. Ryan laughs as Shane slowly comes to a pause.
"You know, Ryan...I've actually have something I want to tell you," Shane says, worry in his voice. He begins to shake a bit.
Okay, maybe he was wrong. Maybe he can spare this mortal the truth.
"Yeah?" Ryan asks. "You know whatever it is, I won't make fun of you for, right?" He clears. Shane nods.
"Yeah, yeah. Just...this has been on my mind for a while and I can't really keep it a secret anymore." He says. Ryan chuckles nervously.
"Okay..." He says, waiting for Shane to tell him. He hesitates before saying anything. Like a frog stuck in his throat, he can't utter a word. Sick or lost, call it what you want. Either way, he's scared and stuttering.
"I wanted to tell you that-"
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
A chilling scream fills the night. Shane and Ryan turn their heads to the road and their eyes widen. Goosebumps down down their skin while the sound replayed in their heads. They look at each other, waiting for the other person to do something.
"Let's go," Ryan says. He smiles, ready for trouble, and Shane has no choice but to follow his friend. He's nervous nonetheless, but he knows he can handle what will come.
The boys chase after the scream and are ready to expose the murderer and solve the case police haven't been able to crack for years.
Perhaps this mystery won't be unsolved.
