*Johnny's Pov*
*A few weeks later*
We took shelter at this high school called "Harriet High." Gates and brick walls surrounded the area. It has a courtyard, showers, and even a wrestling room with mats and a gym. We even added a lookout tower made out of metal and wood. The buses had broke down a few miles back, we had to walk for miles and ended up stumbling upon here. There's about 30 of us now, it used to be 42 of us. Got growlers to thank for that.
Everyone has a job now. Simon's in charge of keeping up with food and gardening. Dylan is our head hunter and scavenger. He goes out to hunt for food, water, and pretty much anything that could help us. Olivia has been getting trained from Matthew, our head doctor. She'll become a doctor herself in the rate she's going.
Claire's in charge of the armory and training everyone on using guns. She became one of if not the best sharpshooters in our camp. My job is being head of security. I make sure this place is safe from growlers and from others. I even have a team of growler killers at the gate.
I walked outside with an apple in hand, to the courtyard. I see our blacksmith Sam talking to his men Tyler and Robert.
Tyler and Robert both are wearing black t-shirts with light brown cargo pants. Sam's wearing this grey sweatpants and a plane white tee-shirt that was pretty dirty. Sam was at the mall from the start and actually helped build the wall with Jack and the Robbins. Nobody has seen the Robbins since that night. Simon said they were already gone including whatever they were working on, when we got thrown in the cells.
"Hey, how's it going?" I asked Sam.
"Oh hey Johnny, we have some ideas on what we could turn this place into." Sam informs me while scratching his grey beard.
"Alright, lets hear it." I said while taking a bite into my apple.
"Okay, so I'm thinking of armor on the gates, made out of car doors and some tree wood for a lookout balcony on the walls. Also I'll have more bow and arrows and knives ready by next week."
"Sounds good, just let me know what you need and I'll head out and get it myself."
"You got it, thank you." He smiled and walked away.
I exit the courtyard and made my way to the nurses room. I walk in and spot Olivia reading some huge medical book. She's wearing this blue jogging suit, with her hair up in a bun, and some reading glasses on.
"Hey, just came here to check up on ya." I announced myself.
"Oh hi Johnny, I'm just busy learning how to save lives that's all." She said worn out.
"When was your last break Olivia?" She laughs at me.
"I-I can't take a break Johnny, this is way to important. This is years of college getting crammed into my brain."
"Well you can't save lives without getting some sleep or eating. C'mon at least eat something and then get back to work, and maybe some sleep."
"Ugh fine."
"Yayyy, aren't I such a great friend?"
"Your a pain in the ass." She mumbles.
"It's my charm." I smiled.
"Have you seen Dylan today?"
"He's out haunting with Troy and Jenny. They should be back soon." Troy and Jenny are step-siblings around my age. Troy's kinda really overprotective over her too. I had to put him on his ass a few times because of it. He tried going after me and Dylan cause he thought we wanted her.
"Oh okay." She gets up and we head to the cafeteria. I stop in the hall. "What's wrong." She asked confused on why I stopped.
"I..I have to tell you something and I'm only telling you because I know you can keep a secret."
"Exactly who am I keeping this secret from?"
"Claire. M..My Dad when we said our last g..goodbye, he gave me my mother and his wedding rings. He told me when we are ready to give it to her. How do I know when we are ready?"
"Okay one, wow I was not expecting that I'm excited, for two I don't know I never been married before, for three that's a freaking hard secret to keep."
"I know I know, I just thought you should know. What do you think about it?" I scratched the back of my neck.
"Well I think you should just go for it. You guys been together since the 5th grade and known each other even longer. Take it from the one who waited until the end of the world to tell Dylan how I truly feel about him. And you better make it special."
"You're right, and trust me I'll add my Ambrose charm." I winked.
"Yeah never say that again." She laughed and we continued on to the cafeteria.
*Dylan's Pov*
*In the woods*
This is the 5th time I been haunting with Troy and Jenny. They're not the best but everybody needs to learn someday. So far we caught a few bunny's and picked some edible berries. This isn't gonna be enough to feed everyone. The food we found in the school is gonna run out sooner or later but we do have the garden.
"Hey, I think I got something." Troy whispers to me. Troy's dark hair blocks his brown eyes, unlike Jenny's dirty blonde and gray eyes. He's wearing one of the black ponchos we found a few weeks back with dark jeans on. I follow him through the woods to see what he found. We crouch behind some bushes as we see a deer eating some berries.
"Good fine. Go ahead it's your kill." I whispered to him. He pulls out the rifle and aims. "What the hell is wrong with you, are you trying to alert every growler over hear??"
"Sorry I-I just though-" I cut him off by pulling back an arrow with my bow and shooting the heart of the deer. The deer falls in a heap. I go over and retrieve the arrow from the deer. "You took my kil-"
"Listen you know that's a last resort I'm not gonna repeat myself when I say, don't you ever use that unless you absolutely need too. Now do I make myself clear?"
"Crystal."
"Go get Jenny and pack up so we can make our way back home." I ordered him as I drag the deer carcass.
Without argument surprisingly, he heads back to where we made camp. I start hearing the moans of 4 growlers heading for my direction. I draw back my bow and shot an arrow through one used to be camper growler eye. I shot another straight through the forehead of a ex-firefighter.
I take out my knife to finish the other two. I drive my knife in the skull of one, and as I pull it out to kill the other one. The growler falls with a bullet coming through the side of it's head. I quickly draw back my bow to whom shot that growler.
A man holding a pistol with a silencer on it, wearing a full swat uniform without a helmet on. Just like that man from Johnny's house. Phoenix, we ran before we knew what they about. And I can't believe that this man, whose staring at me with his blue eyes and scruffy beard is my dad.
