Pain, loneliness, darkness, sorrow that was all that five-year-old Ashlyn Aurora Ketchum knew after her papa was killed by Team Rocket, her papa Red Ketchum was the only one to really love her and she knew that because from a young age Ashlyn was always left alone in the house when her papa was busy, only having her papa's Mr. Mime to take care of her, her mother never bothered with taking care of her or even letting her out she only got to go out when Prof. Oak, Gary, Daisy, her uncle Green or aunt Leaf came to take her to the ranch but now they didn't visit anymore because uncle Green and aunt Leaf were in heaven with her papa and her mother wouldn't let Gary or Prof. Oak anywhere near her when she's around and even when she's gone they couldn't because according to them her mother got a restraining order against them. She never got food or water from her mother, though for some reason a Pikachu would often bring her fruits and a Riolu bringing her a leaf filled with water then she'd tell Pikachu and Riolu to hide and run after she hurriedly ate her given meal because her mother would come back from a disastrous date and start beating her, her Papa's pokemon weren't there to save her they were all locked away, Mr. Mime wasn't there anymore her mother killed him in front of her. Remembering that horrible day the little girl could only curl into a tiny ball around the Pikachu and Riolu in her arms and cry in her little attic no one was there for her anymore, no one loved her anymore. That was her last thought before a loud voice called out her name
"ASHLYN! ASHLYN!" it called out but she was so scared cause it was so dark she didn't call out
"What if mother hit her if she answered? What if she would kill papa's Charizard or Pikachu or Riolu next? I can't let that happen I need to be a good girl and stay quiet act like I don't exist" Ashlyn thought as she hugged Pikachu even closer as he started to elicit sparks
"ASHLYN! PLEASE, DEAR, COME ON OUT" the voice called again now she knew Prof. Oak he was here
"Professor I think Growlithe found something" she heard another voice
"Vigoroth and I'll go check" she heard another person say before the door to the attic was opened and a monkey-like pokemon appeared followed by a man with slightly tanned skin and black hair
"Hey Ashlyn are you hurt?" he asked softly as he crawled over to her mindful of the protective Pikachu and Riolu in her arms
"No sir, not anymore," she said a little scared
"I know you may not remember me but I'm your uncle Norman your dad's friend from Johto," he said stopping in front of her 2 feet away
"But mother told me that I have no family left and that it was my fault papa, uncle Green, and auntie Leaf were killed," she said quietly her voice filled with regret, sadness, and heartbreak
"No honey it wasn't, you have no responsibility for that if anything your a victim of this Delia had no right to tell you that," he said smiling sadly
"I didn't kill them?" she asked as Pikachu started nuzzling her cheek while Riolu hugged her arm
"Of Course, not sweetie now how about we get down from here Prof. Oak and your friend Gary is waiting for you," he said before Ashlyn stretched out her arm for him to take her into his arms while she held Pikachu and Riolu rode on the man's shoulder. When they reached the bottom Ashlyn was immediately taken from Norman by a crying Prof. Oak
"Thank Arceus your alive oh thank Arceus" he sobbed uncontrollably into her matted hair
"Prof. Oak you didn't forget about me?" she asked wanting to verify
"Of course Ashlyn your father was as much my son as your uncle Green," Prof. Oak said before she finally broke
"I'm sorry it was my fault I killed them" she wailed loudly burying her face into prof. Oak's coat broke everyone's heart Officer Jenny had tears in her eyes, Nurse Joy who was called in to check all of Red's pokemon cried as well, Norman couldn't help but imagine if his two-year-old daughter May was in Ashlyn's situation, Vigoroth looked really angry just as angry as Pikachu, Prof. Oak openly cried he loves Ashlyn as much as he loves Gary and knowing that her own mother did this to her didn't help matters much
"Ashlyn it wasn't your fault you are not responsible, you did not kill anyone, no one here blames or hates you. Your mother is wrong" he said hugging her tightly
After letting her calm down Prof. Oak moved everyone to his lab where most of Red's Pokémon were placed while the social worker determined what would be best for Ashlyn to do
"I'm a sorry prof. Oak but I think that it would be best if she left Pallet town for a while it looks like everything she sees in the town makes her think of her abuse or her father, uncle, and aunt which results in her blaming herself" the social worker said sadly
"I see well that's not good I'll have to stop my work here all together," Prof. Oak said conflicted
"Or I could take her with me to Petalburg I could talk to Caroline about it and I'm sure May would like a big sister" Norman suggested seriously
"Mr. Maple it is a very tuff process and Ashlyn will need a substantial amount of your attention," the social worker said
"I can set my time to give her my attention besides Caroline was a social worker too so she can help where I can't," Norman said looking at the sleeping girl who still had tear marks around her eyes
"I think that is a great idea I know for a fact that Red named Norman and Green Ashlyn's godfathers," Prof. Oak said thoughtfully
"I'll call Caroline right now," Norman said before his phone rang "Hello?"
"Norman your late for our annual meeting. What happened? Is something wrong?" Winona's gentle and light voice asked through the phone
"Winona not now please I promise to tell you and Steven what happened when I get back to Petalburg," he said looking at Ashlyn
"Alright Norman but you better tell me when you get back so what do I tell the others?" she asked trusting Norman she knew the man was responsible so the reason must be valid
"Tell them, prof. Oak ask me to meet with him regarding my goddaughter" he said
"Alright Norman goodbye," she said before the call ended then he called his wife
