When they arrived in Rustboro they immediately went to the pokemon center to allow both Hydreigons and their eggs to get a nice and thorough check up to make sure that they really were ok
"May, Max where do you want to visit before I head to the gym?" Ashlyn asked as she and Alain walked over to their younger companinons
"I kinda have a pokemon I want to catch" May said as she brushed Eevee and giving Torchic some treats
"I kinda want to check out the pokemon school here" Max said his Castform and Mudkip happily followed him
"Alright you two can go and do what you want while Ashlyn and I will to the gym" Alain said before the two younger siblings bolted out of the center
"Are you sure you don't want to relax instead of watching?" Ashlyn asked shyly
"I'm sure" Alain said smiling gently
"Look out!" a young boy called out before Alain was knocked to the ground by a orange and black pokemon making Ashlyn giggle
"Are you ok?" she asked as she tried to control her giggles
"Yeah" Alain said chuckling before he got a good lick in his cheek
"Growlithe!" the same young boy said before Alain got up when the fire type got off his chest
"I'm so sorry" the boy said bowing
"No harm done don't worry" Alain said before Ashlyn knelt down to pet Growlithe
"Say are you a student of Roxanne?" Ashlyn asked the boy
"Yeah I am are you here to challenge her?" he asked
"Yes actually I am. Is she available?" Ashlyn asked while Alain petted Growlithe
"Yeah I think she's at the gym right now I can take you to her. Oh my name is Kaito by the way" he said grinning widely
"Thank you Kaito" Alain said as he and Ashlyn followed the little boy
A little way through the walk towards the gym Ashlyn started giggling making Alain look at her strangely before he realized that Growlithe was following him happily and it was adorable
"Awww how cute" Ashlyn said teasingly
"Haha" Alain said while mock rolling his eyes
"Were here! Ms. Roxanne you have a challenger" Kaito said as he ran into the gym
"Oh thank you Kaito" A woman with red eyes and brown hair, which is tied up into two pigtails with a red bow, with a small black U-stripe. She wears a grey school sleeveless uniform skirt with a rectangular print, which is white on the inside. She also wears a white undershirt, with short sleeves and a pair of black shoes.
"Hello Ms. Roxanne my name is Ashlyn Ketchum and I'd like to challenge you for the Stone Badge" Ashlyn said respectfully
"Of course this way please" Roxanne said as she walked towards the battle field which surprisingly Max was already there arguing with a red haired young boy with chocolate brown eyes
"Max Maple!" Ashlyn called shocked and slightly angry that Max was arguing with another boy "What's going on?"
"He insulted Castform" Max said making Ashlyn raise her eyebrow as her eyes traveled towards the other boy
"What!? It's a useless pokemon" the other young boy said making Max growl again
"Jimmy!" Roxanne scolded angrily "You should never insult a pokemon!"
"But it-!" Jimmy argued but was cut off when he saw Ashlyn and Alain's cold eyes
"Ms. Roxanne perhaps a pokemon battle between these two" Alain suggested as Ashlyn just nudged Max forward
"If only to prove to Jimmy here that their is no such thing as a useless pokemon" Ashlyn continued
"A wonderful idea" Roxanne said knowing what they were implying
"Hmp! Fine!" Jimmy yelled before running towards the right end of the field while Max took left with Castform
"Onix!" Jimmy called out before the rock snake pokemon appeared
"Castform" Max said before Castform floated onto the battle grown "Set up with Rain Dance"
"Rock throw!" Jimmy said before Onix threw four feet tall boulders towards Castform
"Energy Ball to destroy those boulders!" Max said before Castform launched Energy Balls in quick succession destroying the boulders "Now Hydro Pump!"
"We'll there we have it" Ashlyn said smirking as Onix fell to the ground in pain
"Just goes to show him that all pokemon have the capability to be strong" Alain said before smiling when he saw Growlith nuzzling his leg
"Hmph whatever" Jimmy said before they were all escorted to another room
"Great job Max" Ashlyn said as she juggled her younger brother
"Thanks" Max said grinning
"I believe we have a gym battle Ashlyn" Roxanne said before she made her way to the gym leader's corner
"Good luck Ashlyn-nee" Max said before ran to where Alain was in the audience section
"Geodude" Roxanne called out as she released her first pokemon
"Hmm alright then Treecko!" Ashlyn said as she released her wood gecko pokemon who just crossed his arms and placed a twig into his mouth
"Geodude Tackle!" Roxanne said before Geodude rushed towards Treecko
"Dodge it!" Ashlyn commands before Treecko back flipped out of Geodude's way and onto one of the giant boulders "Now Bullet Seed!"
"No" the rock type gym leader said when her pokemon was hit by the super effective grass type attack
"Follow it up with Leaf Storm!" Ashlyn said before Treecko launched a tornado of leaves towards Geodude knocking it out
"Thank you Geodude please rest" Roxanne said before she released her second pokemon Nosepass
"Hm Treecko come back Pikachu your turn!" Ashlyn said before returning her Treecko to give way for Pikachu to jump in
"Are you sure about your choice Ashlyn?" Roxanne asked not entirely certain about the girl
"Yes I'm sure in fact Pikachu has a surprise for you" Ashlyn said smirking mischievously
"Very well then Nosepass Rocktomb!" Roxanne commands before Nosepass levitates several large boulders into the air to throw them at Pikachu
"Pikachu Iron Tail to send them back!" Ashlyn said before Pikachu's tail lit up with a metallic grey glow before hitting the boulders back to Nosepass
"Tank it!" Roxanne said before Nosepass just caught the boulders before crushing them
"Pikachu time for our little surprise Surf!" Ashlyn said smirking mischievously as Pikachu summoned a giant wave aimed towards Nosepass and when it hit Nosepass was knocked out when the water receeded
When Nosepass passed out Pikachu looked at everyone who looked shocked well except Max who looked ready to burst into laughter and Ashlyn who was giggling quietly
"WHAT!?" everyone else exclaimed except for Alain who just gaped
"Well she did say that he had a surprise" Max said cheekily
"How did Pikachu learn that?" Alain asked Max
"Aunt Winona took us to a vacation to Galar and She bought us several Technical Records and well we discovered that Pikachu can learn Surf" Max said grinning
"We'll I must admit I was definitely surprised" Roxanne said still in shock but grinning
"Well no one normally thinks a Pikachu could use that move" Pikachu said giggling
"Oh well as proof of your victory in the Rustboro City Gym, I give you the Stone Badge" Roxanne said smiling as she gave Ashlyn her well deserved badge
