THE CHURCH FIRE WAS 100% REAL, AND ACCORDING TO C. THOMAS HOWELL (PONYBOY CURTIS), OUT OF CONTROL.
Tommy Howell (Ponyboy Curtis) claimed that the church fire was definitely not animation, and quite frankly, it was quite a huge fire. They really needed to be careful that no real damage would happen during the filming of the scene, and you could even see the actors purposefully stepping around the small fires on the floor. I'm pretty sure that a fire as big as that would be a little bit too expensive to animate anyway.
