JUST LIKE MATT DILLON'S (DALLAS WINSTON) REQUEST TO SPEND A NIGHT IN JAIL, FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA  MADE RALPH MACCHIO (JOHNNY CADE) SPEND A COUPLE NIGHTS SLEEPING ON PARK BENCHES WITH NEWSPAPERS AS BLANKETS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HIS CHARACTER.

In an interview, Macchio told the interviewers that Coppola had made him sleep in the park with newspapers for almost a week before filming so he could really feel what it's like to be the poor kid without a family or a home. Francis also gave him five dollars every day and said that he could buy his meals with only that amount of money every day. Ralph had said that it wasn't exactly comfortable and he went to bed every night with a near-empty stomach, but he said that it was a good acting experience.
