S.E HINTON WROTE THE FIRST COUPLE OF CHAPTERS OF THE BOOK OUT OF ANGER.
The Greasers and Socs are based on real high school cliques that Hinton was familiar with, and the gang in the book was based on a real-life gang. One of Hinton's guy friends were jumped when she was in high school, and angrily, she decided to write the book to inform people of what it was really like and how hard it was to be a Greaser.
