_ _ _"I'm going to miss you."
Grey smiled holding her in his lap. He felt Midnight dig her face deeper into his chest. He was glad their departure was more quiet and peace rather than her crying. He hated seeing her cry.
His heart started to hurt more as he felt her cling tighter onto him and her breaths becoming more shallow. Despite her not telling him, he knew she was feeling the same searing pain at the thought of leaving and not being able to see each other. To feel each other. To be together.
Grey sighed at that thought but decided against saying anything. All he did was lean back onto the chair and brought Midnight as close as she could get to him. He tried to not leave any amount of space in between.
He was at war with the idea of leaving his baby. It felt like this was the last time they would get moments like this.
He felt uncertain fear at the thought they would break apart and the feelings would fade away. He felt rage at the thought of someone pursuing her to move on but mostly, Grey felt sadness because no one would be as sweet as his Night. No one would make him feel as happy as she did and no one would come cheer him on when the world was against him.
He sat silently.
"I'll miss you too Night."
"Come during the holidays okay? And don't forget to text and if you're not busy, call. Also, always make sure to eat well and do you're best at work. Don't forget-"
He kissed her softly to quiet her.
Their lips moved slowly as if trying to slow down the time. Though his eyes were closed he knew slight tears filled her eyes. Pulling her closer, he deepened their kiss and held her closer. Pulling her as close as he could, Close as he can for the very last time.
This would be their last kiss.
Once he opened his eyes and broke away he saw his Night staring at him with glistening tears. Her dark bright obsidian eyes staring at him. Into his soul. Trying to memorize each line of him, each feel of touch, each moment they had together.
One last time.
They didn't say anything after that. He held her close and peppered small kisses all around her. Her face, her neck, her hands, her heart. He implanted them for her to remember and for him to forget.
Forget this was ending.
He held her close and whispered all the things he never got to really say. He whispered how much he loved her blue-infused hair, her bright dark eyes, that pretty smile that never left and the pure and gentle soul that made him fall.
She cuddled closer, holding him together. Trying to fix the damage of their soon to be departure. They held each other so close, trying to mold into one, trying to be one. Trying to imprint the feeling of this.
She brushed his hair across the side and gave him one soft kiss on his forehead. He closed his eyes and sighed, pushing his face onto her chest. As they laid on the small couch, the sounds of people laughing, children playing and cars honking, they laid in the quiet. They laid with peace.
The very last time.
Both wished the pain would leave their chest faster. Both hoped the pain would disappear when the time comes. Both hoped the pain would just go. But, both knew they'd prefer to live with the pain for the rest of their lives if it meant that they'd stay side by side.
She whispered all the things she loved about him which he drew lazily on her hip. Still in his lap the lovers let the world fall behind and let indulged in the presence of one another. The noon was turning into the night and they knew once they'd wake up the next day, it was time to go. Time to jump back into reality. Away from each other.
Away from the one he loved.
Away from the one she wanted
So they held each other, trying to let go. Trying to forget that the morning will soon come. Holding onto what they had for one more time.
The dawn broke slowly just as they did. They laid in bed tracing each other's smiles, tears and scars. She memorized each scar he wore and he counted each minute go by. The drive was slow, both didn't utter much but the way they held onto each other's hands said enough. Breakfast was solemn but the small smiles they gave each other told the happiness they shared. The goodbyes were quiet but the pounding in their chests told a different story. They were almost at the end.
Separating from each other, she had tears in her eyes and to quiet her cries, he kissed her one more time, held her close then let her go. He walked away from her as she turned around to go inside the airport, the daylight finally breaking in.
Both never saw what fate had in stored for them. To take a chance was hard but to let go of it was even harder. To feel like this was the last time she'd love again. To feel like this was the last time he'd see her made Midnight's heart hurt to the core. She willed herself to try and push away the pain. Grey would always be hers. Right? No matter what they had to try. She would always try.
Even if this was the last time.
She'd always continue to try.
As she took a seat, she wiped her tears, took a breath and smiled as her phone dinged.
