Samus's new and improved gunship zoomed into orbit around SR388 . Anxiety set in as she descended below the skyline, she knew the danger more than anyone and the overwhelming odds against her. The clouds parted revealing a barren surface full of jagged rocks and the occasional plant life. Her ship set down on the edge of a canyon and she exited from below , stepping out onto the surface which had small traces of grass. A few feet infront of her was a pile of jagged rocks and what appeared to be a narrow opening . She walked toward the rocks while taking in the barren environment atop this canyon. It was sunny so she atleast didn't have to worry about bad weather inhibiting progress. She stepped sideways between the narrow gap in the rocks and found a steep slope leading downwards getting darker as it did. She slid down the slope and shot her way through several boulders to make a path forward. She blasted a tougher boulder away with a missile but the small explosion caused the ground to collapse and she fell into a room below. Quickly getting to her feet , she found herself in a room made out of some sort of yellowish brick like material. Vines crept through the cracks claiming most of the room.
"Short range scans suggest this room is part of a chozo structure that makes up the bulk of the surrounding area, ruins are atleast several hundred years old. Unable to gather more intel"
"Why would the chozo come to a place like this" Samus muttered to herself as she made her way through the only visible exit of the room. A bat like creature flew at her and she swatted it away with her arm cannon as she pressed forward. The path ended at a chasm layered with multiple tree branches , using the screw attack she made her way ever further by cutting through the branches as she descended to the ground below. She was now in a small dim cave with only a crack in the ceiling and numerous plants to provide faint sunlight to the cave. On the ground a frog like creature hopped toward a shrivelled up corpse and sniffed it, immediately backing off and hopping away as Samus approached. Leaning down she turned the corpse over and shuddered upon discovering it to be a galactic federation soldier.
"Target's life signs are flat, cause of death was likely a surprise attack by a metroid. Another corpse nearby also suffered the same fate"
Samus switched to her ice beam as she readied herself to once again come face to face with these monsters. The scan visor described the frog like creature to be a hornotoad as it hopped away around a corner. A metroid caught it by surprise as it came around the corner and the force of its impact knocked the hornotoad to the ground as it leeched its life force . Samus charged up an ice shot and was about to shoot when unexpectedly the Metroid whined and slowly drifted away from her and landed on the ground, it's body began to harden as a thick material formed around it. Suddenly the material cracked and the metroid's body was ripped in half as a new creature crawled out from its skin! This new creature was brown and had four claws infront of its mouth and four short legs that looked undeveloped, it rose into the air , it's body somehow suspended in the air just like a metroid. The creature had four eyes on either side and it's stomach was a see through blue sack that contained a red membrane inside.
Samus scanned it in shock and very carefully studied the words the scan visor showed her as this new monstrosity was detailed.
"Morphology: Alpha Metroid. Alphas are first in a series of evolutions a metroid will go through in it's life. Much like the common larval metroid an alpha flies through the air and maintains a similar though less lethal weakness to ice and missiles. Alphas drop orbs from their bodies that can paralyse prey and unlike their larval counterparts an alpha will actually attempt to eat its prey with its new powerful jaws. Consumed food is somehow atomically pulled apart and it's energy becomes the source of nutrition for the creature "
The Alpha metroid dive bombed head first at its enemy with its jaws extended but Samus hit it back with her cannon and attempted to fire a missile at its sack as it flew back up. It dropped several orbs and she avoided them by screw attacking into the air, she collided with the alpha and it was blown to pieces upon contact.
"Adam come in!. What the hell was that about? When were you going to tell me they can fucking evolve and become stronger?!"
A brief static proceeds before a response comes through. "I nor anyone else here know about this. We are all seeing this for the first time just like you are. We don't have an explanation and I really can't say anything at the moment except that the stakes are now higher than they previously were. If they can evolve than it is imperative you destroy this menace at all costs. "
The transmission ended as Samus walked off in panic. For the first time in a long time she was again afraid for her life. This mission was hard enough initially but now the rules had changed. Who knew how many more evolutions there could be or how powerful they would become.
