UNEDITED
The little girl clutched onto her teddy bear tightly, making the cotton shrink back from the force. She was standing inside the playroom and since everyone else were told to go play outside, she was left alone in that room. She looked worriedly at the door, which was slightly ajar, giving her a view of the two adults outside.
She wished her friend Keith was here. Keith always knew how to make her feel better, and taught her how to protect herself from mean kids and mean adults. Aside from Keith, she didn't really have anyone that she could call a friend. Everyone that she befriended had moved away afterall.
The two adults- a man and a woman, were in a deep conversation outside the door. She wasn't close enough to hear what they were saying, and shrunk back when they raised their voices. That was always a bad sign.
Mrs. Gertude entered the room along with the man, who was smiling now. He wore a suit, which the girl had seen in the movie posters.
"You're Livia, aren't you?"
"Yes," she meekly replied, taking a step back while holding the stuffed bear.
The man didn't seem to be fazed by her behavior and continued to speak with a smile on his face.
"I'm Robert Walter. Do you like bears?"
She nodded, and Mrs. Gertude rolled her eyes and left the room. Livia didn't like Mrs. Gertude. Keith hated her. She was always mean to everyone and never shared candy like others.
The very next day, the man had brought ten teddy bears for Livia. He had placed them in the playroom and Livia looked up at him in wonder.
"Why?" She asked, still staying six feet away from the man.
"You said you liked bears," he simply replied.
Livia frowned, remembering that she had indeed said that. To her, this man's actions were strange. None of the foster parents that took her in acted like this. They would call her names and tell her to stay away, and return her once they had gotten a baby or she wasn't getting them enough money. Now that she was almost ten years old, no one seemed to like her withdrawn personality.
"Are those," she slowly said, glancing up at the man. "For me?"
There was doubt in her huge eyes and the man was determined to prove her wrong.
"Yes, those are for you."
"Oh." She looked down at her own teddy bear, which was in her arms. Keith had always told her to return favours so no one could take advantage of her. She didn't have anything to call her own except the teddy bear one foster parent had gotten her. They had returned her when they got a baby, but allowed her to keep the bear.
Pouting a little, she held out her bear to the man, whose eyes widened at the gesture.
"You can have Mr. Fluff," she offered.
Not knowing what to do, Mr. Walter took the stuffed animal from the girl, who was stubbornly holding it out to him. She was a strange kid to him.
That night, Keith praised her for returning the favour, although he was as upset as her to loose Mr. Fluff.
"I don't think he's a bad person, Livy." He had said to her.
"He's strange."
"Because he gave you teddy bears?" Keith childishly laughed. Livia was like the sister he had never had.
"Don't laugh at me," she puffed out ger cheeks.
"You know, Livy, I think he might like you. Maybe he'll be the one to give you the home you deserve."
