--Brooke’s POV--

I sat in the back of the taxi holding tight onto Chloe’s hand. I watched the Australian cityscape fade into trees and empty space out the window I was resting my head against.

“It’s going to be fine, you know,” Chloe said absently mindedly. I nodded. But I didn’t believe her.

I didn’t know what was going to happen. Did he want me back? Did I want him back? Of course I did. I couldn’t stop thinking about him. But, was he over me? He could easily have found another girl by now.

Chloe was texting Luke. I could tell because she was smiling softly at the dimly lit screen. She was one of the people who turned the brightness down on her phone to save the battery, which annoyed the life out of me because I couldn’t see the screen if she was showing me something.

“We’re about a half hour away, ladies,” the taxi driver called back to us.

My heart felt like it was gonna fall out of my body.

-- Calum’s POV --

I kept glancing at the clock. I didn’t mean to, but my eyes kept shifting back to it to check what time it was.

I heard Luke laughing from across the room, and looked up to see him looking at me.

“She’ll be here soon,” he said, laughing again.

I threw the alarm clock face down on the bed.  Luke was on his phone, typing happily with a soft smile on his face.

I felt physically ill. I had no idea how I was going to handle this situation. It’s okay dreaming and imagining a moment, but when you do it for so long, you forget what you’re actually supposed to do. You have acted out so many different scenarios in your head, you don’t even know which one to do.

Should I kiss her? Hug her? I didn’t even know what the official status of our relationship was, for fuck sake! I sighed loudly and buried my head in the pillow beside me. My mum was making a huge meal for us. She excessively cooks when she is excited about something; and right now she was super excited, so there was a lot of food. Lasagne, so many salads, fruit, soup, bread….everything. EVERYTHING.

“They’re about half an hour away,” Luke said suddenly, bringing me out of my daydream.

“Shit,” I mumbled, removing my face from the pillow. I grabbed my phone. No messages, but an incoming phone-call from Michael. I loved it when I picked up my phone as it rang. Magic.

“Hey man,” I said.

“I’m coming over with ice-cream,” he said, panting slightly.

“Where are you?” I laughed.

“I’m on my way to yours! On my skateboard...shit...be there soon okay love you bye!” he hung up.

“Michael’s coming?” Luke said, sitting up on his elbows. I nodded in response.

“Stop overthinking, Calum,” he warned. “It’ll be fine. It’s not as if she’s a stranger, you know her inside out.”

He had a point, but that very point was the one that was scaring me the most. I knew so much about her, and I loved so much about her it was just such an overwhelming moment. This was do or die for me. This visit would be the decider if I won Brooke back, or if I’d lose her forever. And it would really be forever.

I crawled under my bedcovers, consumed by tidal waves of emotions and rendered almost entirely useless. And I’d probably stay like this for the next 20 minutes.

-- Chloe’s POV --

Brooke’s sweaty hand was still locked around mine in the backseat of the taxi. It was almost pitch black, except for the faint wave of passing streetlight illuminations. I watched my friends’ profile.

Her eyes were wide open, blinking every so often, staring at nothing in particular out the glass of the window. She hadn’t moved for a good 10 minutes. I sighed, which really hurt my ribs. I clutched them slightly.

“I don’t even know what I’m going to say to him,” she said, not moving from the position she was in. Not even looking over to me.

“Hello would be a start,” I joked. She didn’t respond. “Look, it’s Cal. It’s just Calum. Don’t treat this as some big reunion. It’s just another day with friends. Do you still like him?” I asked quietly.

She nodded slowly.

“That’s why it hurts so much, and that’s why I’m so nervous. He’s just a stupid boy who broke my heart, but he’s a stupid boy who will always have my heart….no matter how many pieces it’s in,” she said, finally looking at me. I squeezed her hand.

“Then you just have to let whatever happens happen. Don’t pre-empt anything. Just let everything happen naturally. That’s my advice,” I said.

“Here we are girlies,” the taxi man announced, pulling into a driveway in a suburban street.

We thanked and paid him, and watched the yellow car drive away into the distance, leaving us staring at the beautiful family home in front of us with our luggage behind us.

“Well, shit,” said Brooke beside me. “This is it”.

-- Calum’s POV --

I heard the faint sound of tyres crunching on the gravel outside my house.

“Did you hear that?” I said, shooting out of bed and heading straight for my window. I peeked out of my blinds and saw two people standing outside, facing my house. One of them was the love of my life.

“Shit, they’re here,” I said, turning to my friends and bandmates who were sprawled on my floor. Luke sprang up, running to my side to look out the window. Michael lay on the floor, clutching his tub of ice cream.

“No they’re not?” said Luke, looking at me quizzically.

Then we heard a knock on the door downstairs.

I sprinted down the stairs, clutching on the banisters so that I didn’t go headfirst down them all. Luckily, my mum hadn’t reached the door yet.

“I GOT IT!” I shouted. “I got it,” I said again cooly when I reached the bottom of the stairs. My mum gave me a strange look, patted me on the head, and returned to cooking her ridiculous amount of food.

I exhaled and wiped my sweaty palms on my jeans before reaching for the door handle. I opened the door, smiling. The air was knocked from my lungs when I saw her again. Her shoulder length hair was still dip dyed, her eyes still as blue as the sky, her smile still as warm as ever.

“Hey,” I breathed. We locked eyes and my heart felt like it was going to take flight. Brooke’s face broke into one of the most beautiful smiles I have ever seen.

“Hey you,” she said. Her voice was like honey. It was a sound I sorely missed; one I heard over and over in my sleep.

She took a step closer, stepping into my house. She dropped her luggage lightly, and looked back up to me, her face still warm and friendly. She had a slight blush across her cheeks. I couldn’t stop the smile from spreading on my face.

And I couldn’t stop myself when I pulled her in close to me and wrapped my arms around her.
