Everything was hurting. I heard some voices around me, but I couldn't make the words they were saying. All I could think about was the pain in my back. I tried to move and find a more comfortable position, but it all ended with more pain. I guess the people who were talking around me saw me moving because I felt a hand on my arm and heard a voice a lot closer than before. I think they were asking me something, but I had no idea what that was. I had no idea where I was, what happened to me, how I got here. All I could think was the pain.

"Hurt." Barely managed to mumble the word, but I guess the person who was with me understood what I was talking about, because in the next moment I heard some buttons beeping and the pain was going away. Just like that. I could breathe easier, even though I tried to open my eyes, but they were so heavy that I decided that it wasn't worth it right now. I felt my body relax, and sleep took over me.

The next time I woke up, there were no voices around me. I tried opening my eyes and somehow managed to do it. White walls, a lot of machines beeping with my heartbeat...hospital. Why was I in a hospital? Then, all came back to me at once. The bank, the robbers, the shot guy... Joshua! His name was Joshua! Then the broken window, the loud noises, the men in black gear, with their helmets and riffles. And then...one of the bad guys took me...he...he shot me? I think. Yeah! He shot me in the back! And then the officer who was so angry with the medics. Dax. He told me that his name was Dax. And Ace...his dog...I guess he got me here, right? I think I was in his car at some point... right?

"I see that you are awake. How are you feeling, Ms. Wilson?" I looked at the door, and there was a lady who I assume was a nurse. She came to me and started checking something on all the machines around me.

"I'm..." I couldn't talk. My throat felt very bad. The nurse saw that I was struggling, walked to a table, and took a pink cup with a straw.

"Water? It'll help you, just don't rush it, take it slow."

That first sip was awful, it hurt so bad that I was ready to give up, but the nurse made me continue and with every sip that I took, my throat started to feel a lot better.

"Better, right?" The cup was empty within seconds.

"Yeah... it is."

"So, do you know where you are?"

"Umm, at a hospital?"

"Yes. You were injured during a bank robbery. Do you remember that?"

"Yeah, I do. An officer took me here, right?"

"That's right!" Wow, she sounded so excited that I remembered. She was almost jumping like a child. "How do you feel? Any pain?"

"Yeah, a lot of pain...in my back." My back was killing me. I know that I was shot there, but I thought that while I was here, I wouldn't feel so much pain, you know, they would give me some of the good stuff. I guess I was wrong.

"Oh, sorry about that. We weren't sure if there was something wrong anywhere else except the wound, so we lower your meds to see if you'll be feeling everything as you are supposed to. You feel your hands? Can you touch all of your fingers with your thumbs?" I did as she told me, and I guess I passed the test because she was smiling wide.

"Ok, next thing - your legs." She went to the end of the bed where my legs were and moved the sheet from them. "Can you move your right foot for me? Okay, now the left? Okay. Now, can you push my hand with your right one?" She put her palm on my right foot, and I pushed. "Good. Now, with the left one? Good. Well, I guess everything is working as it's supposed to, so I'll call the doctor to see what we can do for your pain. Be right back."
