Hayley's POV

I finish washing and drying my hands in the school bathroom. I look at my shoulder length dark auburn hair in the mirror and groan a little. I was rushing out of the house this morning so I had little time to get ready and I didn't realize my hair was so messy. I reach into my backpack and search for a hair tie to put my hair in a ponytail. I check my makeup and make sure my hair looks okay one more time before finally leaving the bathroom.

I make my way through the school court yard, it's lunch time right now so it's packed full of people. As I walk by numerous people say hi to me. I smile and greet them back but I don't stick around long enough to talk to them as I make my way towards my usual lunch table where I find my best friend Tanya eating her lunch.

"Hey, where the hell were you this morning?" she asks as I sit down on the other side of the table and drop my bag on the ground.

"I overslept," I say before stealing one of her chips.

"Again?" she asks with a raised brow and I shrug my shoulders.

"All I missed was homeroom. It's not a big deal," I say and she shakes her head at me.

"You're just asking to get detention again," she says like I'm supposed to care.

"Whatever," I say as I steal another one of her chips. She just sighs and rolls her eyes at me.

"Well, you also missed the new girl," she says, immediately gaining my attention.

"There's a new girl?" I ask curiously and she nods.

"Yeah, she's totally hot too," she says and I roll my eyes.

"You think every girl you see is hot," I point out and she scoffs.

"No I don't. Only the hot ones," she says and I shake my head at her.

"Whatever. It honestly doesn't matter how hot she is. I have a girlfriend, remember?" I say as I steal another one of her chips. She rolls her eyes at me before just handing me the bag. I instantly smile at her in appreciation as I take the bag from her.

"Do you really, though?" she asks as she watches make my way through the bag of chips.

"Yes," I say after swallowing. "Just because she's in college now doesn't mean we broke up," I point out and she gives me a skeptical look.

Madison, my girlfriend of almost three years, just started her first year of college earlier this fall. It sucks not having her around but I just have get through the rest of the school year and make it to graduation so I can go to college and join her.

"Dude, you haven't even seen her since summer vacation," Tanya says and I roll my eyes.

I figured that because she is only going to school upstate only a few hours away that we would be able to see each other quite a bit but it hasn't been that easy. Madison has been so overwhelmed with school and getting adjusted to college life that we haven't been able to find the time for her to either drive down here or for me to drive up to her so we could spend time together.

"That's because she's busy," I explain with a shrug of my shoulders as I finish off the bag of chips.

"Yeah, busy probably screwing someone else," she mutters under her breath and I glare at her.

I drop the empty bag of chips on her tray before grabbing my bag off the ground and standing up. "Fuck you," I say before walking off.

"I'm sorry," she calls after me but I don't turn around. "Come on. Don't leave. Hayley!" she yells but I just keep walking.
