Chapter 21
Skylar's POVThe day Hayley's father dragged her away, I was so scared. I have been facing death for as long as I can remember, but that fear is nothing compared to what I felt that day. I just knew that if he took her away that he would kill her. Thinking about what he would do to her terrified me.
I had never met her father, or so much as saw a photo of him, before that day, so I had no idea what he looked like. I could have easily seen him on the street or in the store having no idea who he was or what he was capable of.
I always pictured her father as this big scary looking man, but he looked really average. When he first approached us, I didn't immediately feel threatened, but Hayley very clearly did the second she saw him. Almost within a blink of an eye he changed. He quickly became enraged and had this crazed look in his eyes, it was utterly terrifying.
I should have listened to Hayley and gone into the house the second she told me to. I should have gone in and called the cops right then, but I didn't want to leave her alone with him. When he started dragging her away I was so scared that would be the last time I ever saw her.
By the time I finally did get into the house and called the police, I was afraid they wouldn't get there on time. If I called even a few seconds earlier, maybe things wouldn't have turned out the way they did. Had I called earlier, the police would have shown up sooner and then maybe Hayley would have been okay.
When the police got there, her father had already beaten her so badly that she lost consciousness. He was still hitting her even after she had passed out. My dad and I arrived as the paramedics were putting her in the ambulance. I remember seeing her covered in blood and all I could do was cry and call out to her, but she didn't respond. She always said that her father would kill her and it looked like he had succeeded.
They rushed her to the ER and immediately took her into surgery. I was so scared because I had no idea what was going on and the doctors wouldn't tell us anything. Thankfully I remembered Tanya's father was a doctor at this hospital so I called her and told her what happened. She immediately called her father and asked him to check up on Hayley before coming to the hospital herself. Her dad couldn't really tell us much either but he reassured us that she was going to be okay.
Her aunt and uncle came a few hours later and we were able to learn more. It was really bad. On top of her broken bones, they had to put her into a coma because of all the swelling in her brain. Eventually we were allowed to go in and see her and I broke down. I cried so much seeing her bruised and broken body lying lifeless in the hospital bed.
Over the last week they've been slowly bringing her out of the coma and testing her responses. They say she is responding well and that she should fully wake up soon. I have been at her bedside every day waiting. Tanya and my father have been here every day as well.
Tanya and I immediately go to the hospital after school each day to see her and today is no different. There really isn't much to do other than wait so we try and get our homework done while we are here.
I finish the math problem I'm working on before looking back at Hayley. Every time I look at her I feel a sharp pain in my heart. She doesn't look as bad as she did a week ago but she still looks really bad. The swelling around her nose and eyes have gone down completely, the bruises have become less visible but she still has bandages on her head to cover the stitches on her scalp and her arm is also in a cast.
I'm about to go back to my homework when I see Hayley's eyes start to open. I sit up straight in my chair and look at her as she slowly opens her eyes and starts to look around.
