Book 2 - Chapter 5
Hayley's POV

I walk into my house after a long day and immediately breathe a sigh of relief to be home. I close the door and take my shoes off and just drop my things to the ground before walking the rest of the way into the house.

I rub the back of my neck with my hand as I walk into the kitchen, open the fridge and pull out the water pitcher. I grab a cup out of the cabinet and pour myself a glass of water before immediately gulping it down. I'm about to pour myself another when I feel my phone vibrating in my pocket. With a sigh, I put the pitcher and glass on the counter before reaching into my pocket for my phone.

I look at the screen and see Skylar's name flash across it. I remember my conversation with Tanya the other day and think about not answering the phone for a second but decide to at least see what she wants from me.

"Hello?" I ask when the call connects.

"Hayley?" I hear her voice ask on the other end.

"Yeah."

"Hey. It's Skylar," she says and I laugh lightly.

"Yeah. I know. I saw your name appear on my phone," I say and I hear her laugh a little on her end as well.

"Right. I forgot I gave you my number," she says and I smile.

"So how can I help you?" I ask curiously.

"Right. So I called because my father and his partner are having their tenth anniversary in a couple months and I have been racking my brain on what to get them. But after seeing what an amazing artist you were, I was wondering if I could commission a portrait from you?" she asks, leaving me a little speechless.

This is a first for me. No one has ever tried to commission anything from me before. I'm not even sure how to react to this to be perfectly honest.

"You seriously want to commission a portrait from me?" I ask, still not quite believing my ears.

"Yeah. I was thinking of a charcoal drawing though, not like an actual painting. Do you not do that?" she asks as I run a hand through my hair.

"Sure I have worked with charcoal before and I could definitely do a portrait in it. But I've never done a commission before. I wouldn't even know what to charge to be honest. Wouldn't you rather have a professional do it?"

"If you don't want to do it, that's okay. But I really like your work and I would love to hire you. I looked into pricing and I found people usually charge somewhere around three to four hundred for what I have in mind. Though, I'm willing to pay whatever it is you think is fair," she says and I take a second to think.

Honestly, for some reason, I feel like if she had asked me to do it for free, I probably would have. But it's always been a dream of mine to make money doing something I love, which is art.

"If you really want me to, I can try," I finally say. "But don't you think that you should at least look at my work to make sure I can really do what you want before you agree to paying me four hundred dollars? I mean, you have only ever seen one of my paintings which I'm sure is very different to what you have in mind," I say and I hear her laugh a little.

"What I saw is most definitely not what I had in mind whatsoever, for obvious reasons," she says and I silently laugh. "But based on how good it was, I'm more than confident in your abilities," she says and I nervously run my hand through my hair again.

"I just think I would feel more comfortable if you came and looked at my work to make sure I'm really the person you want doing this," I tell her. "It would also help me get a better idea of what you are looking for, if you haven't changed your mind that is."
