Book 1 - Chapter 3
Skylar's POV

When I get home I walk upstairs to my room. I dump my bag on the ground next to my bed and kick off my shoes before going to my closet and putting on a pair of sweatpants.

After changing I pull my phone out of the pocket of my jeans before tossing them back on the ground. I move over to my bed and collapse on top of it with my phone as I look at the number that Tanya sent me. A soft sigh leaves my mouth as I save Hayley's number in my contacts. I think about calling her for a moment but decide against it for now.

I don't know if I want to call her. But even if I did, I wouldn't do it so soon. She should be the one to wait this time.

I put my phone on my nightstand before reaching over the side of my bed and into my backpack for my books so I can study.

About an hour into studying my phone starts ringing on the nightstand. I put my book down and reach for my phone. I instantly roll my eyes at Hayley's name flashing across my screen. I guess she got tired of waiting for me to call her.

I reluctantly answer the phone and bring it up to my ear. I hear the call connect but I don't say anything.

"Hello? Skylar?" Hayley asks on the other end of the phone and I sigh.

"What?" I ask a little impatiently.

"Hey. I just wanted to say I'm sorry for not showing up today. I wasn't feeling well," she says apologetically.

"Yeah, Tanya said that. I assume you got my number from her so you could have just called me and told me that yourself," I say and she lets out a bit of breathy laugh.

"Yeah... I know. I was afraid you might not take my call," she says a little nervously.

"I probably wouldn't have after you made me wait for you again," I say honestly.

"I had every intention of showing up," she swears. "I had even gotten in my car and was about to head to the school, but I really didn't feel good so I asked Tanya for your number. I had asked her to call you first and see how mad you were. She said you didn't sound really mad... but are you? Mad that is?" she asks carefully and I sigh as I run a hand through my hair.

"I'm really annoyed. You wasted my time and you don't even sound sick to me," I say and she goes silent for a second.

"Yeah, well, I spent the better part of last night puking my guts out so I definitely don't think I'm okay," she says and I frown.

"You are seriously not feeling good? You're not just making excuses for not having shown up?" I question.

I want to believe her but she wouldn't be the first person to claim to be sick as an excuse to get out of something.

"No. I seriously would have been there if I could. I really did try," she says, sounding somewhat sincere. "I really need a tutor because I am so behind in this class. More than I thought. I really didn't want to fuck this up because I seriously need you if I really don't want to fail," she says a little desperately and I sigh.

"Yeah, well, I'm sure you can find another tutor because I'm don't want to keep doing this. This isn't exactly how I want to spend my time," I say honestly.

"Come on Skylar, please help me," she pleads. "Mr. Simmons said you were the best and that's what I need if I want to catch up and not be at risk of failing this class," she says and I sigh before taking a second to think.

She sounds desperate but I'm not sure if I really want to help her as much as she clearly wants me to. I have so many other things going on in my life and I really don't want to be wasting my time with this. Maybe she really is serious about wanting to do well in this class, but who is to say that she won't just waste my time again if I were to give her another chance.
