Promise You

Day 2.2: Departure

Yesung’s POV

“The engagement is off,” his words pierced my heat into billions of pieces. It was enough to get me dumbfounded for a couple of minutes.

“Abeonim, what do you mean?” I didn’t want to assume hearing the wrong thing; but his statement meant its literal meaning. He is breaking our engagement, my engagement to Inyeong; the wedding is canceled.

Right, I failed to keep my promise to her. I continuously said I would attend yet things did not go the way I planned they would. Mr. Hwang called for my presence at Photo Coffee during my vacant hours. All I heard were heartbreaking matters from him and his firm decision of the cancelation…

I asked for a reason and all I got was, “My daughter’s tears are not to be wasted for another man again. She has gone through enough trials; the pain she received is at its limit. I am sure you are not planning to tell me about your act of causing my daughter’s pitiful condition. Whether you were the cure, I do not care as long as you were still the reason of her hardship! You proved me wrong in placing my trust in you.”

It became hard for me to go any closer to her performance. I became afraid of what I might do while I watch her performance. I turned into a coward.

“Jongwoon-ah,” she called and snapped me out from my thoughts.

“Huh?” I found myself dumbfounded for the second time of the day.

“I knew it,” she said. “You weren’t listening to me.”

“I’m sorry…” My head bows, slowly. They’re all killing me; the cancelation of our wedding and now her flight to Japan. The worst part is I’m defenseless against both of it. They’re killing me… more than words can describe.

“Hey,” her gentle voice echoed through my ears. Inyeong lifts my face and our gaze meet. “Are you still sad? Why?”

“You know the answers. Yes, I am sad and it’s partially because of–“ I failed to continue because she landed her finger on my lips, telling me to listen to her.

She smiles an assuring beam at me, “I promise I will make it in time for your birthday.”

“Promise me you won’t stop loving me even if you meet someone who rivals me in Japan,” I pleaded. “Even if you meet the members of Arashi..!”

“I promise~”

“Inyeong is still naïve of the matter. It’s your choice whether you will tell her; either way, I will inform her in the near future.”

“But abeonim..! I love your daughter. And my feelings are not one-sided,” I recalled our deal and immediately used it to, at least, make him reconsider everything. “Please don’t take her away from me. I can’t bear to love her… for the second time in my lifetime.”

 “A mistake committed twice is not an option; it’s a choice young man. You were the first to leave a scar on her when you chose your career over her,” Mr. Hwang said with a stern voice. So he knows of our past relationship yet never said anything against it before. Now he is using it to his advantage to take my fiancé away. “I can’t wager anything further. My daughter might cry for the third time because of you.”

I tightly wrap her in my arms, unwilling to let go. I want to tell you about it but I can’t. If only you can read my mind, I would say my objections to your father’s decisions. I’m sorry..! The words are trapped in my throat. I can’t find the courage to utter the painful words he did. I am afraid of what may happen to us. Her father is against our relationship and is dead serious in his objection. I do not know what convincing words he said to be able to make my parents take his side. Inyeong is soon to depart for Japan too. We do not know what fate has in store for us. It is because of these that I don’t feel like releasing her any moment soon. “Please return back to me after you finish everything there. Please..!”

“I will,” she returns my hug and embraces me with a gentle hold. My lady gently lands a peck on my cheek. “You have my word. Please wait for me and never stop treasuring me, regardless of what may be the obstacle in between.”

“I swear.”
