I could cry. I would cry, if I didn't think Kye was behind this. My life was crumbling right in front of my eyes. Hades was all I held dear, even if he kept triggering my worst nightmares. I couldn't live without him.
"He never killed a cat," I brought out, but the police officer shook his head.
"I will not check if all the claims are true, miss Davidsson, it's just that I got too many. You'll have to discuss with the vet. I've made an appointment for you, for over three days. Is any other parent around to help you?"
"No," I whispered. "Just me and my mom."
When I looked up, I could've sworn I saw something yellowish flash through the man's eyes, before they slowly sagged down to my chest. Blood rushed to my head. What the hell? I shuffled on my chair and rose, making his eyes dart back to mine.
"Are we done?" I asked, snappy.
I certainly hadn't imagined that. That policeman just shamelessly checked my boobs out, while I could see him. Anger flowed through my veins. How dare he. How dare he bring such bad news and make it even worse.
"I think so, yes. Here's the appointment info." He handed me a folded paper. "I'll sent you a fine for wild-hunting later this week."
"Okay," was all I could bring out, as I crumpled the paper between my fingers. The cop reached out his hand to me and I shook it, staring straight into his eyes. He'd know better than to try it again.
As I saw him out, I jammed my hands with the paper deeply into my pockets. My frustration levels were high. Very high. I might hit him in his ugly face if he was going to stay in my house for just a little too long. Luckily, the man felt my anger and was out within seconds.
As soon as the door shut closed, I hit the wall with my fist and let out an aggravated groan.
"How dare he!" I yelled, and Hades barked back from upstairs.
"They're going to put down that stupid dog? Good." My mom turned around on the couch. "I was getting sick and tired of that barking shit. And who pays for the food, hm? Not you, Leah, not you."
You not either, mom. My bitter inner voice reminded her of the fact that she hadn't been able to provide for us for a few years now. We had to move to this hellhole because of that fact. We had to leave behind all that was my dad's, just because she couldn't get herself together.
But I kept silent and calmed myself down. I wasn't one to criticize her coping methods. But somewhere, deep inside, I did lay it at her door, the state we were both in. Weren't adults supposed to be the bigger persons?
I swallowed and dashed upstairs again, so I could start hitting my pillow instead. I placed it carefully on my bed, squeezed my eyes shut, and pictured all the idiots' faces on it. That cop, Chase, and Kye's most of all. Shit, that looked ugly.
