The man had trailed back to the front of the house, standing still as a pillar at our mailbox. My mom kept staring at him through the blinds, her eyes squinted, and her teeth bared. Did she think she could scare him off like that?
Meanwhile, I was digging through dad's old stuff to search for the gun he had. That man was going to find out within a few minutes that no cop was coming. If he was actually planning on breaking down doors to kill us or something, I'd have to protect mom and Hades.
Speaking of Hades, where was he? He'd always bark and growl at any random passerby.
As I opened up a box and found a few pictures of him and mom at their honeymoon, I almost broke down. But I had to keep myself together and do what had to be done. I shoved the pictures aside and found the cold metal weapon. Alright.
I bolted out of the room and found Hades sleeping on my bed.
"Hey!" I hit the dog on its bum. "Time to protect your masters!"
He was awake within a second and sniffed, before baring his teeth like mom had done. They had more in common then they'd like to admit. He almost tripped over his legs, trying to get down, before starting to bark at the door.
My hand was still clasping around the gun, as I brought it up to check if it was even loaded. But how does one check that? Well, whatever. I didn't need to actually shoot the guy, just scare him off. That'd work with a gun, for sure.
I suddenly heard the doorbell go off again. Dashing down the stairs, I found mom on the couch again, and Hades at the door.
I was scared. I was not going to lie; I was damn scared. That man was obviously not right. And his eye color, too. There was something wrong and I wasn't getting it.
The bell rang again.
My mom stared at the gun in my hands but didn't say a word. She didn't like it when I took out dad's belongings, as she probably wanted to forget all about him as soon as possible. Not that that had worked out for her.
Another thing rang, but it wasn't the bell this time. I took out my phone with trembling fingers and slammed it to my ear.
"Ashley Davidsson."
"Kye. I'm at the door but your mother won't open up. I'm getting impatient, little one."
My heart swelled in my chest at his voice as my shoulders dropped. I let out a long sigh.
Right. Eight o'clock. Kye. Abduction.
"Hello?"
"Yeah, yeah. I'm not going with you, just so you know."
I rose from my seat and unlocked the door, to swing it open, revealing a guy I had no idea I'd get so relieved over. We both lowered our phones at the same time, as his dark eyes traveled over my body and my mom behind me, who curiously eyed the handsome guy before glancing past him to see whether the man was still there at our mailbox.
