As I sat in the bus, pressing my cheek against the glass, Kye's words swirled through my head. I'd get raped if I stepped between them, hm? My rational mind debunked that statement within a second. Rapists thrived on being alone with their victim. As soon as I'd be there, I'd be a threat who could call the police on his ass.

Funny man who'd still dare something then.

But my body was restless. I kept wiggling on my seat and plucking on my sweater. Maybe I was being ungrateful and ignorant. Maybe Kye was actually protecting me by locking me up, from something I just had no knowledge of- but why couldn't he just tell me if that was the case?

I left the bus without a word to the driver, too caught up in my thoughts. Too caught up to notice the numerous yellow flickering eyes that followed my every move. To notice that the moon might've even been larger and brighter than it was last night.

The house was too dark. Mom might have lost parts of her sanity after dad left us, but she still always left a few lights on to keep burglars out. Something was wrong.

I was flooded with guilt. Why did I leave her? I should've put up more of a fight, maybe demand Kye that if he was so set on taking me, he should take my mother too. Hugged her and lever let her go.

Taking out my keys with trembling, cold fingers, I went over all the doom scenarios that might enfold before me as soon as I opened this door. The doc was early, and mom had already been raped and left behind. The doc took her to his house instead. Or he killed off the lights to make things easier for himself.

Ugh!

The key kept bumping all around the keyhole instead of in. My fingers had gone numb by the cold at this point already, and my nervousness wasn't helping things. What if I was too late? No, the doctor always came around ten, and the only church in town just told me it was only half past nine.

"Ashley!" someone hissed, making me jump and whirl around.

The doctor, in his casual attire, came strolling up our path with hooded eyes. He was a tall man, lean, with big facial features. He nauseated me to the point of that I always felt the need to throw up in his presence.

"Mom isn't home," I told him, ready to take whatever consequence that lie brought with it.

He sighed. "Yes, I know, because she just sprinted into the woods like some madwoman. I tried to retrieve her, but I couldn't find her anymore."

"Huh- what?" I stammered, falling back against the door as the doctor came closer and closer. I could smell alcohol and too sweet of a cologne on him.

"It is of no matter, though. She'll find her way back. In the meantime, why don't we wait inside?"

He reached for my arm, but I jerked it away, dropping my housekeys in the progress. My vision was hazy. Mom? Alone, in the woods? Suddenly, the whole fantasy-rogue thing came to mind. And never mind that, there were wolves in there!
