The group of five headed down to Rixon's Cove to hear the news that John B had to tell them. Everyone helped start a fire and once it was going they sat around it chatting. The boys had extra clothes to change into so it was only the two girls who still had their dresses on. Shaye sat next to JJ and it was the first time she got a good look at him since they saw each other.
"Oh my , JJ. Your face" Shaye muttered running her finger along a cut on his cheek.
JJ smiled before grabbing her hand and holding it. "I'm alright, I promise. My dad just got mad about the whole thing."
Her heart went out for the boy. "I'm so sorry. I should've taken the fall, not you" She muttered guiltily.
"Shaye. If you took the fall, none of us would ever see you again. It had to be me. And trust me I'm okay"
Not looking convinced the girl only nodded, squeezing his hand. "Hey guys" Pope sounded causing the two break out of their moment. "So, like, my dad's already gonna kill me. So what's this mandatory meeting about?"
"Yeah what was worth me pissing off my parents for the next ten years about?" Shaye included laughing lightly. Truthfully, she was terrified about going home tonight but it would be an even bigger deal if she didn't go home sooner rather than later.
"Might as well tell him man. Before we're gaffed" JJ muttered
Shaye and Kie's heads shot over to JJ. "What?" They asked at the same time.
"So the gold never went down with the Royal Merchant. " John B started
Pope sighed, "Here we go again with this"
"It's been here the whole time" JB smirked. "It's on the island"
Shaye's heart skipped a beat. "Are you serious?" Kie asked
"Oh my god" Shaye muttered
"I'd like to voice my skepticism" Pope interjected
John B then proceeded to get out a letter and show Pope his evidence. "I have a letter from Denmark Tanny"
"Who is that" Shaye asked leaning on JJ's side as they listened. The boy threw his arm around her shoulder and smiled. He missed her.
"Denmark Tanny was a slave that survived the Royal Merchant wreck" JB explained
He handed Kie the letter to read and continued talking. "Okay slaves weren't mentioned as crew members on the ship. But my dad, he found the complete manifest. That was his big discovery. So Tanny used the gold from the merchant to buy his freedom. After that, he bought his farm. That farm is TannyHill plantation. So after that he used his money to free even more slaves and then he sold a ton of rice which pisses off all the white planters, and then they decide to lynch him. " He paused for dramatic effect. "So on the day they were coming to get him he writes a letter to his son as a farewell, telling him where he hid the gold."
