James

"James, don't forget the real reason why you are getting this position." Drake reminded me.

"There's nothing like that," I said shifting my gaze away as the memories of the past came flashing back to me.

"You shouldn't be denying facts. At the end of the day, every single one of us knows about your-"

"-That's enough!" I growled as a sudden rush of angst ran through me. I never liked being reminded of what could have happened if things were played differently. Life was like a board of game. If the pieces fall off from the board, the chances of it gaining that same position as before were practically impossible. The fortune of gaining a second chance was not possible, until and unless, the game was to be started from scratch.

I did what I had to. I couldn't keep myself or anyone away from what was destined to happen. I was no one to change the pieces played by the moon goddess, herself. We had no right because at the end of the day we were still her slaves, the guard dogs of the werewolf world, our own kind.

"As you wish," Drake mumbled getting off the bed.

"Where are you going?" I asked as he hopped off the bed and headed towards the door.

"To bring the Book of Myths," he rolled his eyes while placing his palm on the door-knob, "You coming?"

"The sorcerer is gone right?" I asked though it came out more like an affirmation.

"Yes. He is." He sighed, "I'll be back."

I watched as Drake left and closed the door behind him. His mood changed faster than the direction of the wind. It was hard to tell or comment about his mood since it was changing its colour every now and then.

But the main aspect for me to worry about wasn't his mood, it was the rewritten version of the Book of Myths. I feared something bad was about to come up. It was a gut feeling and the fact that my wolf wasn't responding didn't help either. It made me more anxious.

I wondered what was ahead to come especially about my rejection by Alina. She most probably would be affected by this as much as me. I knew I was being selfish by only thinking about myself but I couldn't help it. One single question was driving me crazy.

What if my wolf disappears and I turn into a human?

I didn't like the thought of it. I wasn't ready to go through something like that. I hated the feeling of anxiety and dreadfulness inside of me. And that particular question was having an impact on me which I couldn't avoid.

The sudden creak of the door brought me back to reality. My gaze shifted towards the door to see Drake peaking inside, his face not clearly visible other than the colour of his pitch-black hair.

"Why are you peaking?" I narrowed my eyes as his familiar face came into view.

He flashed a sheepish smile. "I was just checking upon you."

"Did you get the Book?" I asked impatiently.

He nodded and stepped forward, retrieving from the dark with a thick old book in his hand. He raised his hands and showed me the book as a grin crept up to his lips.

It was a massive success for him. He survived the sorcerer's aura without diminishing himself into the dark.

The steps he took forward towards me seemed slower than ever. The tension was building inside of me and I could clearly hear the sound of the clock ticking. With every single tick, the time felt slower. I felt a sweat drip down my forehead as I stood there painfully waiting for him to hand me the book.

Nervousness would be an understatement to explain how I felt as every single tick of the clock reached my ears. My fate was decided and it was time for me to know what was ahead to come.

"Here," Drake said, placing the book on the bed.

I bent my knees and lowered myself on the clean-titled floor followed by Drake.

"Open the book." He whispered in an awfully persuasive manner.

My fingers trembled as I lightly touched the edge of the book in front of me. Negative thoughts running around inside my head as I gulped and turned the page.

My eyes widened as I gaped at the book lying on my bed. A loud gasp escaped from beside as I turned my head to face Drake.

"It's b-blank." My lips trembled, my voice was barely audible.

Can we take a break now? —I asked my wolf as I painfully made my way deep inside the forest.

But we should keep walking.

I can't walk anymore. My legs are killing me. — I groaned in pain.

Fine. Walk a few more hours then we can rest.

A few more hours? I can't even take a step forward due to pain. Why am I feeling this pain anyway?

You wouldn't want to be killed by an Alpha for passing his land without permission. — She stated calmly.

We are passing through the forest. — I reminded her.

This area is marked for sure. I can feel the aura.

Come on, stop it already. I can't walk anymore.

But you have to. I'm not fooling around here. That's what humans do and neither of us is human here.

What are you going to do now? I can't carry on walking anymore. — I repeated.

I don't know. — She trailed off.

Crack!

A sudden sound echoed.

What was that? — I panicked as the sound reached my ears.

We are shifting. She announced, followed by the sound of several bones breaking inside of my body.

We are going to die if our mate is not here. — She howled as the sound of my bones being smashed took over.

The pain was unbearable. I was being ripped apart as my bones shifted its shape inside of me, readjusting to a different form which I was never aware of. I rolled uncomfortably on the ground trying to adjust to the pain that made its sudden appearance.

This was going to be the end of me, I knew it. Surviving the shifting process without a mate was impossible. And here I was in a situation between life and death, where the string I was hanging onto was about to break. It was when suddenly a male wolf appeared in front of me and placed a paw on top of my head.

James? I asked but there was no reply.
