Chapter Forty-Eight

"You do realise that bullet was meant for you?"

Those words rang inside my head repetitively. Jace was right. In order to save me, James risked his own life. If only he stood still next to Jace, nothing like this would have ever happened. He would have been his usual self.

He did it to protect us. - My wolf snarled. He is our mate after all.

"We have many questions yet still not a single answer." Drake sighed. Jace nodded his head and looked at me, almost trying to pierce through my mind.

"So tell me, Alina, why would anyone want to attack you?" Jace asked rather curiously. He shifted a little on his seat, almost leaning forward trying to lend his ear from the far end of the room.

"-Yeah, that's a good question to start with." Drake agreed and looked at me.

"I don't know," I answered truthfully. I honestly did not have an answer to that. Neil and I already had enough on our plates dealing with the missing cases and abandoned wolves. If it was not for Luke's sudden disappearance, we wouldn't have crossed paths with James in the Graveyard of Doom. We wouldn't have gone there in the first place, to begin with.

"It has to be a coincidence?" Drake asked unconvinced. Jace shook his head ferociously.

"Coincidence?" Jace chuckled, "You do realise that James got shot in the Graveyard of Doom. Out of all the place, the Graveyard of Doom?"

Drake rolled his eyes. "Yeah, why did you take him there? That place is fucking abandoned and out of the equation for us. Restricted."

"You are not getting the picture here." Jace continued, "If that place is out of the equation how did someone know that we were going in for a visit? It can't be a coincidence."

"There are two possible scenarios." Jace pointed. "One, someone was there. The same time, the same place, someone happened to be there, doing their own thing and instinctively shot in the thin air for their own protection because they sensed our presence."

Drake snickered at that assumption. He rolled his eyes and gagged. Jace squinted his eyes and continued soon after, "Contrary to that, the second option is that someone followed you." Jace pointed at me, "Someone followed you and was keeping an eye on you. Found the chance to strike, shoot." He pointed gun like gestures with his fingers. "So, am I right? Or am I right?"

Drake and I gaped at him. "How is that even possible?" I broke my silence. "I'd like to believe no one was following me." I folded my arms to my chest. "That's absurd."

"I know, that's literally the only two options.-"

Drake interrupted Jace and said, "-What if it was randomly shot to scare us off, distract us from our observations?"

Fuck.

"The possibility is slim. I feel the abandoned wolves have gone wild because they are looking for something. Something that will wipe us out from existence." Jace stated soon after.

"But what could it be?" Drake and Jace looked at me.

"Do you happen to know anything?" Drake asked.

I shook my head, "I do remember an abandoned wolf saying that we were blinded by the power and position." I recalled the incident back at the cell a while ago. We tortured her and that was the very last thing she said to us.

I got snippets from that day, her blood on the floor as I killed her myself. My palms fully stained with her blood and many more that I have killed in the past. And what bothered me was that I had no regrets.

"That sounds awful." Jace sighed. "No wonder they have gone wild. They want the power of being in a pack."

"Still doesn't make any sense." Drake snorted, "Assuming that they want power, why would they randomly shoot on you while you guys were at the Graveyard. I feel there is something that we are missing out on."

"They wouldn't dare steal the witch's remains," I added.

Both the men stopped their conversation and glared at me like I had grown a third eye. "I mean-"

"-FUCK." Both of them shouted in unison. "The remains itself can wipe out the existence of all supernatural beings including us."

"The abandoned wolves won't dare interfere with any of the extremities that lie behind the sacred shrine."

Jace and Drake did have a point. The abandoned wolves had an intention, a plan they were trying to accomplish by destroying and burning our packs. They were toying with our minds, killing our pack members and family right in front of our own eyes. We failed to protect our pack. We failed to protect our family. The murder and disappearance of our pack members exposed all our vulnerabilities.

"Just in case I was wondering if any of your pack members got murdered over the last few months?" I asked Drake.

Drake gasped and nodded, "Yes, I'm afraid."

"Looking at the situation I'm afraid I don't understand how someone can enter our territory and let alone kill our members?"

"Are you-" Drake started.

"-We have faced similar predicaments." I continued. "I feel the abandoned wolves are in touch with our internal resources, members in other words."

"That fucking traitor- Fuck-" Drake screeched. "-James just moved his fingers again!" He announced and jumped from his seat.

He rushed towards the bed and called out. "James, bud can you hear me?"

I grabbed my mate's palm and started rubbing it. He groaned soon after. His movements became prominent and I heard my wolf call out to him. Jace hovered over and called out too.

It didn't take much effort, just me holding my breath, anticipating to see those honey-brown orbs again. My wish didn't take long to come true. A few minutes later I was able to see his look into his eyes while his fingers were intertwined into mine.

My heart skipped a beat.

James woke up.

My mate.
