- Jasmine -
Toby sat next to me looking extremely relaxed considering the continuous death glares from Corey, Luke was returning the glares in Corey's direction and the table was in an eerie silence. My parents were glancing from Corey to me and Corey's parents did the same."So Toby what courses are you studying at college?" My dad asked him, and I started to wonder because I didn't even know what he was studying.
"Well I'm studying carpentry, I want to be a builder eventually." Toby glanced at me and smiled.
"He's also studying the art of stealing peoples girlfriends." Corey said those eyes of his locking onto mine.
"Toby and I are just friends." I said quietly even though Toby and Luke knew I was lying, but everyone else seemed to believe it, so who cares.
"Yeah that's why you go everywhere with him." Corey raised his voice.
I stood up my chair grinding out behind me, slammed my napkin down on my food and glared at Corey. "Look would you just lay off! You're the one who kissed another friggin girl!" I yelled at him, "Sorry Luke." I said as I grabbed Toby's hand and lead him up to my room. "That's shouldn't have happened in front of my brother."
"Hey relax, it's out in the open and your parents know, his parents know and it's not so awkward anymore." Toby reasoned, he was looking at the old photos of me all around my room.
"Luke didn't deserve to see that."
"He's strong. I can tell that from just meeting him, it's the way he walks and talks."
"You think so? I just feel like I haven't been the best role model for him. He deserves a brother like you."
"J you don't understand how much like you he is. He's not a quitter, he's strong and independent." Toby said but I could hear yelling downstairs.
Luke came running in and slammed the door behind him, he looked scared. I studied his face but he was crying and it was hard to tell what he'd seen. "Dad's angry. Very angry with Corey." Luke sniffled, Toby brought him a tissue from my night stand.
"Luke you know both of us have to go back down there. Toby doesn't but we do." I took my little brother's hand and walked for the door, "I'm sorry Toby this was really stupid of me to invite you."
Luke and I walked down the stairs, it took me a minute to realise Toby was coming down behind us. "Hey," he said putting a hand on my shoulder. "I wanted to come."
I took a deep breath and lent against the door frame. Dad looked angry, Luke had been right. He looked like he would pull out a gun and shoot Corey if he could. "I trusted you to look after my daughter, and you go and cheat on her!"
"She's not innocent, look, she's got him." Corey glared at Toby.
"Yeah but I was there for her when you weren't, I didn't take her from you. She found out you cheated and moved on." Toby said calmly.
"She moved on alright, into your pants." Corey growled at Toby.
"Corey." His mother looked thoroughly embarrassed, "Mind your manners, that's incredibly rude."
"Mrs Anderson, what did you do when you found out about your husband was a criminal and cheating on you?" I interrupted avoiding eye contact with Corey.
"I... Well Jasmine, I... I moved out and got a divorce." She looked taken aback by my sudden question.
"See Corey, I'm gonna do what your mum did we are officially broken up and I think you need to leave my house. You have upset my boyfriend, my brother and me." I adjusted my glasses and waited for a response.
"Oh so he's your boyfriend now?" Corey stared at me in disbelief.
"Yes he is and you need to deal with it." Luke cuddled in to my side.
"I think we might go now Corey." Mrs Anderson said getting up and walking over to thank my parents.
I back over to the table and started clearing away the plates and wine glasses, Toby and Luke jumped in and helped. To be totally honest this was my master plan for avoiding the 'goodbye's', and so far it was working.
I waited till mum and dad came back in before leaving the safety of the kitchen. "Well that was intense." My mum commented glancing at me for answers. Answers I didn't have.
"People change mum." Was all I could say, what else was there to say?
"You said you were there for Jasmine when Corey wasn't, what's that supposed to mean." Dad looked at Toby expectantly.
"Sir, she was distraught and upset, I couldn't bare to see her cry anymore. I didn't take advantage of her like a lot of guys would, I just looked after her when she needed someone."
"And that was supposed to be Corey's job." My dad shook his head, "I'd like to meet your parents sometime Toby, thank you for looking after Jasmine for me."
"Ah dad maybe-" I started but Toby cut in.
"Mr Foster, I don't have any parents. I'm an orphan and my foster mother doesn't even want me, she only wants the money." I laced my fingers through Toby's and laid my head on his shoulder.
"Oh Toby that's terrible," mum cried "Where will you go after you leave here?"
"I suppose I'll go back to campus and just hang around there." Toby shrugged.
"You can't spend Easter alone. Honey, why doesn't Toby stay here." My mum asked my dad, he was quiet for a long time considering it.
"If you don't mind the couch Toby." Dad smiled.
I started to beam excitedly, "I'll go grab some blankets and a pillow." I took the stairs two at a time and searched through the cupboard.
Toby came up behind me and kissed the back of my neck,"That can wait till later." He picked me up and carried me into my room. "Oooh someone is having a slight spaz." He chuckled.
I moved my gaze over to the window, Corey was throwing things around in his room, Toby wandered over to the window and closed the curtains.
"Happy Easter babe." He smiled and sat down next to me on my bed.
"How are you so calm even with you know who living next door?"
"Wait he's Voldemort. I'm so scared now."
I laughed at his remark and he laughed along with me, "I can't believe you get to spend the long weekend with us. I think Luke deserves a role model like you."
"You know I've done thinks I'm not proud of."
"But everyone has, besides that's behind us now, right?"
"Right."
"I love you so much."
"I know."
"I know? What kind of response is that to 'I love you'?"
"I'm just messing with you J. I love you too."
I looked at the clock, "It's late, we should probably get some sleep. Zoe's family is coming over for a barbecue here tomorrow, so I've gotta get up early and help mum prepare."
"Okay, wake me so I can help too. Goodnight J." He kissed my forehead and walked over to the door.
"Do you want me to make your bed?"
"I can make my own bed you know. See you in the morning."
I was left in my room to think about what a special guy Toby was, I was wrong the first time with Corey. But with Toby I was sure he was the one. And I wasn't about to let him go anywhere.
