Chapter 15

I can see Sydney, from where I was standing, below. I now couldn't decipher which one is the better view, the trees from afar, or the love of my life.

"You are a very beautiful young lady, Samantha." I smiled as soon as I heard the praise coming from Doña Amelia.

"Thank you, ma'am..." I shyly answered.

"Do you have a boyfriend?" She asked and I immediately shook my head.

Wala sa sarili akong napatingin kay Syd who's busy taking pictures.

"You know what, kung hindi mo mamasamain, my grandson is also single. He's a civil engineer, I think you would both suit each other." she said in a very cheerful voice.

Pakiramdam ko ay may kung anong nakabara sa aking lalamunan at hindi ko alam kung anong sasabihin. I couldn't say that I have a girlfriend. I don't think she'd understand and I don't think Doña Amelia would see me the way she saw me a few hours ago if she'd know.

I only smiled at her, "I have no plans yet on having a serious relationship, mam." I said.

"I see. But I'm hoping, iha, really. Na balang araw if you'd come back here, sana ay nobyo mo na ang aking apo." biro ni Doña Amelia at humawak sa aking braso.

Tawa lamang ang aking naisagot sa Doña at bumaling muli sa aking minamahal.

Nang matapos ang aming pag-uusap ay niyaya kami ng nakakatandang Hidalgo na doon na lamang maghapunan. I refused at first but then the first grandson arrived and Doña Amelia insisted even more.

"Iha, this is my grandson Frederico Hidalgo - Benitez, the one I've been telling you about." pakilala ni Doña Amelia sa panganay niyang apo.

Sydney looked a bit confused but it was my biggest relief when she remained silent and behave the whole time. Pakiramdam ko nga ay parang hindi masyadong pinapansin si Syd. Parang gusto kong matunaw sa aking kinauupuan sa tuwing ibinibida sa akin ni Doña Amelia si Rico habang pasama na ng pasama ang timpla ni Syd sa aking tabi.

Nang matapos nang kumain ang lahat ay minabuti ko nang magpaalam sa dalawang Hidalgo.

Hindi na sumama pa palabas si Doña Amelia but Rico was so nice to walk us outside. Rico seemed nice and aside from that, he is really good looking. Makikita talagang sumisigaw ng karangyaan ang kanyang kilos at paraan ng pananamit. He even offered to drive us to our hotel but I refused kasi ramdam ko na ang nagtitimping galit ni Syd. I thanked Rico for the last time and then we left.

Sydney never spoke a single word to me since then. I tried talking to her by asking her about things but I get no response.

Hanggang sa makarating kami sa hotel ay hindi ako nito kinakausap.

"Syd, please talk to me." I begged when we finally got inside our room ngunit wala pa rin itong kibo.

"Babe, please talk to me..." Pagmamakaawa ko sa kanya.

Sunod ako ng sunod kung san man siya pumunta saan mang sulok ng kwarto hanggang sa makapasok siya sa cr.

I went behind her when she was busy fixing her things on the countertop in front of the mirror. I hugged her from her back and placed my forehead over hear shoulders.

"Love, I'm sorry, please talk to me..." I said.

Deafening silence followed thereafter. Hindi siya kumilos at ako man ay hindi rin.

Only our heartbeats and breaths are the only sound coming from us inside the comfort room. I'm not used to consoling a partner but here I am trying to console and apologize to Syd.
