Violette was never supposed to be a part of this story. She was supposed to stay up in New Jersey with her punk rock of an excuse for an Uncle and her more then slightly homophobic Aunt and her adorable younger cousins. Her Uncle wasn't supposed to get in a car accident and almost die. She wasn't supposed shipped off across the country to the desert to go live her Aunt's ex and his kid. Violette didn't understand how sending away the person who was able to help take care of the kids would help make things easier, because of course her Aunt had been trying to get rid of her for years. And so now Violette was left in the desert. At least Autumn had good taste in music. At least her dad made good French toast. At least Autumn and her cousin Alva would be hypocrites for judging her for dying her hair bright purple. At least Shadow could write poems that made her feel better about having no parents. At least the family seemed nice. At least Sebastian was too busy working most of the time to pay any mind to her. So it wasn't that bad as long as she didn't think about how she missed her Uncle or how awful her Aunt is or how Autumn, Shadow, and Alva's friend's dad had gone missing. But the quiet always leaves people to think. And it was quiet. Sebastian was out working even though it was the middle of the night and Autumn was asleep. So Violette opened the same window that Shadow had and snuck out like she had been doing for the last few days.
Only this night she wasn't able to escape to the stupid, silent desert because she saw two teenagers trying to sneak into a window in the house of the person that every one of her new acquaintances seemed to be friends with to the point they called her whenever they hung out as a group, which was fine cuz she seemed chill, but as far as Violette knew, Viola didn't have any siblings. And based on that knowledge and the fact that Viola's dad just when missing, can you really blame Violette from running up to where they were trying to get in and grabbing the one of them?
Only the one she grabbed was wearing short sleeves and for some unexplained reason, when Violette placed her bare hands on the stranger, pain coursed though her body as their blood spilled from large wounds where the two of them touched that were not there before they had come into contact. And so naturally, they both screamed. From there Violette sort of black out til she found herself sitting on a couch in an unfamiliar living room with her hands bandaged. Next to her was a high school aged boy with dark hair and on the other side of him was a kid that looked a littler younger then Violette. Yet another high schooler Violette recognized as Viola sat on a chair near the other kid and a tall man had pulled a chair from the dining room to sit in front of the minors in front of him.
"Please tell me, what just happened." He spoke emotionlessly yet in a way that was still scary.
"I saw them breaking in to the house and I thought maybe they were going to kidnap Viola like they took her dad so I tried to grab one of them and then I felt really hurt and I saw the blood and I..." the words fell numbly from her mouth.
"I just wanted to talk to Viola," Said the boy, "Nat caught me sneaking out and decided to come with me."
"Did you two walk all the way here to talk to me?" Asked Viola, shocked.
"No, we took the bus." Said the boy in an attempt to lighten the mood slightly.
"What just happened?" Nat practically whispered.
Viola's dad sighed. "It's a bit of a long story, but I suppose we couldn't hide it forever."
"What?" Viola voiced what they were all thinking.
