Katie leaned against the cool surface of the window, the raindrops sliding down the glass almost exactly mirroring her tears.
She couldn't believe it.
A whole month had passed since Travis had left for his quest.
A quest that was only supposed to last a week.
They were all certain that he would be fine, but Katie didn't fail to spot the worried glances that were exchanged when she 'wasn't looking'.
It wasn't all okay, and maybe it never would be again.
She knew that was probably an exaggeration, and that the world would obviously still go on if he never came back, but that didn't mean it wouldn't feel like a knife to her chest.
Pulling her blanket closer to her, she burrowed deeper into her bed, in a futile attempt to block out the world.
She faintly heard the horn for dinner sound, but ignored it, as she had been doing every night.
She didn't talk to people, and gave no one the chance to talk to her.
Every time she even attempted to speak - even just practicing in the mirror with the aim to make her smile seem less forced - her voice cracked, and she watched her usually bright green eyes dim even more before shattering completely. She couldn't let them see how broken she was.
She heard the door creak open, and glanced out from under her pile of blankets, to see Miranda eyeing the state of the room warily, holding a cup of hot tea in front of her.
Normally, Katie barely picked at the food they offered her, but tea was her weakness, and Miranda knew that.
Hand shaking, she reached out and grasped the cup, relishing in the warmth that spread through her body. How had she been shivering under so many blankets?
The drink warmed her to the core, as chai tea usually did, and she felt herself relaxing against her will.
She shouldn't relax when Travis was possibly facing terrible monsters. Why did she get to sit in her cabin and mope while he was off risking his life?
She blindly attempted to set her cup down on the table beside her, eyes filling with new tears - of uselessness, this time - and causing her to nearly miss the wooden surface.
The cup teetered on the edge for a split second, as Katie - making no attempt to save her own drink - moved her shaky hands up to wipe the fresh tears off her face.
In the nick of time, she snapped back to her senses and attempted to catch the cup, but found herself grasping at thin air.
It landed on the floor with a surprisingly hollow thud, the beverage spilling in every direction.
After cleaning up the mess as best she could, Katie found herself climbing back into her bed, before pausing.
Travis wouldn't want to see her like this.
His smile was always bigger, his eyes alight with joy, whenever she herself was happy.
Standing up, she made her way to the bathroom, where she splashed cold water on her face, and brushed her hair for the first time in at least a week.
Putting on a fresh camp tee, denim shorts, and her favorite worn Converse, she put her hair into one long braid down her back, deciding against her usual double french braids.
She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself to face the "are you doing okay?"s and "I'm sure he's okay"s that were sure to await her from her fellow campers that were nice in theory, but not what she currently wanted to hear.
She did a double-take when she opened the door.
There he was, standing with his hands stuffed casually into his jean pockets, a lopsided smirk gracing his lips, hair disheveled as always.
Katie was half tempted to shut the door in his face for taking so long to come back.
But she didn't.
"Sorry I'm late, Katie-kat, time really flies when you're being pursued by ancient Greek demons, ya know?"
And then she smiled a bigger smile than she had in a long time. It wasn't fake or overly wide, but it was perfect.
Her smile became even brighter when she saw Travis's own smirk growing and shifting into a true smile.
Everything would be okay.
