Ten.

Ten things Katie Gardner thought she knew about Travis Stoll.

Ten things she couldn't have gotten more wrong if she'd tried.

Nine.

Nine words she had spoken to him, lost in the wind forever.

Nine words she could never go back and change, no matter how much she wanted to.

Eight.

Eight seconds she stood there, watching him fall, watching him be caught by the doctor.

Eight seconds that felt to her like eight years.

Seven.

Seven minutes away from the nearest pub, away from temporary escape.

Seven minutes of blissful ignorance.

Six.

Six minutes he remained alive for, speaking his final words to everyone but Katie.

Six minutes before his shot was thrown away, before he ran out of time.

Five.

Five times she thought about trying to see him one last time.

Five times she stood up, pushing her chair back, and five times she sat back down, head in her hands.

Four.

Four syllables in her name, the name of a villain in history.

Four syllables overshadowed for years, finally basking in the cruel, cold spotlight she'd craved for so long.

Three.

Three times she'd seen him smile directly at her in their whole lives of hatred.

Three times she'd shoved down the butterflies battling in her stomach, three times she'd blatantly ignored such a mischievous, good-for-nothing smirk.

Two.

Two women at his side when he died.

Two women, neither of which was Katie Gardner, because Katie Gardner was hiding like the coward she was in a pub in New Jersey.

One.

One phrase she wished she could have told him in his final moments.

One phrase, a string of words, that would weigh her down until her final breath.

There were ten duel commandments, ten ways to prove such a bloody, disastrous process was just and acceptable.

Ten commandments, but innumerable regrets.

please note: none of these things are historically accurate (except for the burr/ham duel ofc), and i'm drawing on the musical and my imagination rather than correct history lol
