I stood there awkwardly, just sipping my drink and watching everyone- well, almost everyone- dance.
Vriska had thrown some stupid Christmas party at her house, and practically everyone was dancing, except for me and Aradia, who was leaning against the opposite wall. I wanted so badly to walk over to her, but I was just too nervous. What would we talk about? Did we even have anything in common?
"Come on Thollux. All you gotta do iith walk over and thay hii. that'th not too hard, now, iith iit?" I muttered to myself. I finally worked up my courage and walked across the dance floor, weaving in between dancers and nearly running into Tavros, who was dancing with Gamzee.
"HeY sOlBro, YoU gOtTa WaTcH wHeRe ThE fUcK yOu'Re GoInG." Gamzee said.
"Yeah, thorry Tavroth."
"iT'S OKAY, sOLLUX,,, i'M FINE." Tavros said in that wavering voice of his. I continued across the dance floor and stopped a little bit away from Aradia.
"Uh, hey, AA." I said. She turned her head towards me, her brown hair flipping out behind her a bit.
"Hello Sollux."
"Tho, uh. Niice party, huh?" I asked. I was mentally face palming. 'Stupid, stupid, stupid! Of all things you ask about this stupid party? Well, at least it wasn't the weather.'
She shrugged her shoulders and simply said, "I guess. It's a bit too loud for my tastes."
"Yeah. Iit'th pretty loud. What d'you make of the punch?" I asked.
"I think it's spiked." she looked at her cup and frowned.
"Well, knowiing Vriithka... probably." I replied. I pushed my bi-colored glasses up. It was suddenly really hot, and my nose had started getting sweaty, causing my glasses to slip. Just then, a group of older girls came over, giggling and talking. They sounded drunk. "D'you wanna go over there or thomethiing?" I asked, pointing to a more secluded are.
She looked over and smiled slightly. "Sure."
I took her cup and sat it down on the ground along with my half empty one before walking over to the corner by a large window.
"What do you do for fun?" She asked.
"Well, iit'th mothtly computer thtuff." I answered. I didn't really want to go into it and scare her off.
She tilted her head. "Oh? What kind of computer stuff?"
I looked down and took off my glasses, cleaning them amd wiping the sweat off of my nose- careful not to let her see my eyes- before putting them back on and saying, "Well, II make codeth and thometiimeth II'll make viideogameth and II'm pretty good at hackiing."
She raised her eyebrows. "Really?"
I nodded. "Yeah. Remember the tiime when the thchoool webthiite wath red and blue and had beeth everywhere?"
"Yes, but they never found out who did it.... wait. That was you?" She looked shocked.
"No need to look tho thurpriithed. Iit wath eathy." I said, laughing.
She laughed too. She had this really pretty, light, tinkling laugh. It suited her. "Well, what about you?" I asked.
"Hm? What about me?" She looked confused.
"II mean, what do you do for fun?"
"Oh! Well, I really like archaeology."
"Cool. Tell me about iit."
"Really?" She looked awed and it was really cute.
"Yeah. Iit theemth liike iit miight be pretty iinterethtiing." I said.
"Well, it's the study of material objects from ancient life. Like the ancient Egyptians and other, similar civilizations. I like to read up on them a lot."
We continued talking and we found out quite a bit about each other. For instance, her favorite color is red, her family is from Italy, and when she was younger, she got in a bad accident that killed her mother and made it hard for her to express emotion through her voice. I told her that my favorite colors were red and blue, my family is from Spain, and I have a split tounge and double incisors, thus contributing to my lisp, along with my braces.
We were getting onto the subject of family members when a drunken Vriska ran by with an equally drunk Terezi on her shoulders. She practically screeched to a stop and pointed somewhere above us, saying, "Mistletoe! You two have to kiss!" and ran off somewhere, with Terezi giggling madly on her shoulders.
We both looked up, and sure enough, at the top of the window pane hung a clump of misteltoe. I could feel my face grow red as I looked down and I saw Aradia standing there with a little smile on her lips. I closed my eyes and leaned forward, giving her a small peck. When I pulled away she laughed that tinkling laugh of hers. I felt pretty self conscious. Was it that terrible?
"You call that a kiss?" Next thing I know, I'm being pulled forward and our lips are smashed together. She was a pretty good kisser. Not that I had anything to compare it to. Well, that one kiss from FF when we were 8, but- I'm getting off track here. From what I could tell, she was good. When we pulled away she was smiling.
"Do you want to leave? It's pretty hot in here. And loud." She asked.
I nodded. "Uh, Yeah. Thure." She grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the door. When we got outside, I took a deep breath of the cool, crisp air. Neither of us had let go of the other's hand, and I wasn't going to be the one to change that. We just walked around for a while, and ended up outside of a nearby diner.
"Do you want to get something to eat? I'm really hungry." She told me.
"Alriight. But II'm payiing." I told her. "Waiit." I said holding up my finger. I felt around for my wallet. When I found it there was about $50 in it. Thank god I didn't lose it. "Yup. II'm payiing." She laughed again and I thought, 'I could listen to that laugh all day.'
We walked in and sat down. We had a pretty good time. The food was great, and we laughed almost non-stop. When it was nearly midnight, I asked, "Tho, doeth thiith count ath a date?"
Aradia looked thoughtful. "Yes, I suppose it does."
"Would you liike to go on anther one? Maybe a moviie or a walk iin the park?"
"A walk in the park sounds lovely. We should pack a picnic too."
"Yeth, of courthe, the piicniic. How could II forget?"
She laughed again. "So, when will this walk-in-the-park-picnic be?"
"How about next Thaturday? II'll come get you. And, tho II know where to go, here iith my number." I wrote it down on a napkin and slid it across the table. She looked at it and stuffed it in her pocket. We got up and left, parting ways on the main road, both of us walking home.
I couldn't wait for Saturday.
