-Ash's POV-
And so, the couple got happily married and all was well. I throw the book to the floor. Stupid fairytale ending. What books don't understand is that not everything ends with a 'happy ever after'. I should know.
It's Wednesday at 5 PM, and I'm sitting on my couch, while my book is lying on the floor. I straighten myself up, and grab my phone, which is next to my mug of apple cider. I open the notes section and make an edit to my table.
How Final Books of a Series/ Solo books end
Stupid, non-realistic fairy tale endings: 893
Actually good endings: 264
What do I mean by fairytale endings? I will tell you. It's always the same. Two people fall in love, defeat the bad guy, every protagonist miraculously survives, the lovers get married, and somehow have a PERFECT life after this. It's ridiculous.
Just because a book has a fairytale ending doesn't mean it's not good though. But when you have a mass genocide, and everyone dies except for the main protagonists, it is just ridiculous. Unless all of the main protagonists are expert warriors or something, they should be treated as normal humans.
Let me give you some examples of good, realistic endings. Harry Potter (Cursed Child not included), The Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings, some fan fictions that I read, and other select series.
One thing I hate in books is what I like to call, 'Hero's Immunity'. Tell me one thing. How many books/series have you read where the main protagonists die and STAY dead. I'm willing to bet it's under 20. Maybe even under 10. And this creates a problem. If you know they're not going to die, a story becomes predictable. Let me give you a scenario. Hero is on the ledge of a tall building, barely grasping on with their fingertips, while Villain is stepping on their fingers. What happens next?
Is it A) Hero miraculously survives the fall, B) Hero does a ridiculously insane stunt in which the hero ends up pushing the villain down, or C) they both go down together and only the hero survives if one dies? Because I can guarantee it is not D) the hero dies as most people would in that situation. And this is the problem.
I close my notes section on my phone, and go over to the text section. I find Serena's contact and punch in a message.
Me: Hey Serena, I just finished a book, and I am looking for recommendations.
SerenaY: Oh cool! I actually finished one on Sunday, and it was really good.
Me: Really? Could you tell me the name of the book?
SerenaY: Yes of course. It is called Shattered.
Me: Oh you mean that one? I heard it was really good, but I haven't gotten the chance to read it yet.
SerenaY: Yeah, you should definitely check it out when you have the chance.
Me: Ok, I will. Gtg, Ttyl.
SerenaY: Ok, Bye!
After my conversation with Serena, I decide to exit my dorm and get a gift for Serena, since tomorrow is her birthday. She didn't tell me, probably since she doesn't want me to feel like I got a gift for her, but her Fennekin disagrees with that statement and told me. So I put my shoes on, and walk out of the dorm to find the perfect present.
After walking around for some time, I come to the shopping area of the town. I see some fake bat cut outs, some jack-o-lanterns and some other decorations. While I am here, I might as well pick out a Halloween costume as well, since we are having a Halloween party on Halloween. I walk into the mall, and enter into the first shop.
After 30 minutes of shopping, I still haven't found anything that Serena would like. I also haven't found a Halloween costume yet. I decide to check out a costume shop to see if there is anything that I would like.
The stool is filled with different costumes, and I spend my time looking through the aisles. Eventually, though, I find a costume that I really like. I put it in my bag, happy that I have got halfway through.
As if on cue, my stomach lets out a loud rumble and I decide to take a small break for dinner. After eating, I push my chair in and continue my search for a good present.
Another hour later and I still haven't found anything yet. I decide to check in one more shop. I look through the aisles, when suddenly something catches my eye! It's perfect. There is a blue ribbon right there, which I know would look perfect on Serena! I pay for the ribbon, and leave the shop.
When I go back to my dorm, I put the ribbon, as well as my other gift that I made for her, in a bag. I smile at the presents, then lie on my bed, thinking about Serena, Honey, the letter, school, Pokémon, and many other things before drifting to sleep.
-End of Chapter 30-
This chapter is sort of short. Sorry, but I needed to set up chapter 31, Serena's birthday.
