Joe's POV
At dinner, everyone is talking and laughing like old times. It feels so great to be able to see everyone again and have a family dinner like this, where everyone is just being normal, and we're not in the public eye for once. And then Mom drops a bomb on us.
"So, you guys, Frankie is attending a dance in two days," she says, and at once everyone's attention is fixed on her.
"Really?" Brexley says.
"Yes. And I'm going to warn you all ahead of time that he is bringing a date," she says, and the room explodes.
"WHAT?" Kevin and I yell at the same time, as Brexley yells "He has a girlfriend?"
"Guys, I'm eleven, not five! You had dates at eleven!" Frankie retorts, and I shush him with a wave of my hand.
"What the hell," I say, completely caught off guard at this.
"Joe! Language!" Mom says.
"Sorry."
"And there's something else. You all are expected to go as well. It's a big celebrity mixer dance type of thing," she tells us.
"Mom, where am I supposed to get a dress in that short of time? Thanks for the heads up!" Brexley says crossly.
"Oh, you have plenty of things you've never worn in your closet. Just pick one of those!"
"Who else is going to be there?" Kevin asks her.
"I know for a fact Taylor Swift will be there, but I'm not sure who else," Mom says.
I groan at that; it's always awkward to see your ex, but something else entirely when you have to go to a big dance and she's there.
"Look, guys, I'm sorry, but the invitations came for you all before you got here, and we RSVP'd saying you were all going. I'm sure it will be fun though. How bad can a dance be?" Dad adds in.
"But we don't even have time to find dates!" Brexley says.
"Well, Kevin and Dani will obviously go together. And Brex, me and you can just go together as siblings. It's not that big of a deal, basically everyone knows we're super close anyway. It won't be weird," I tell her, and she relaxes a little.
"I guess. Sorry for snapping at you, Mom," Brexley apologizes, and our mom nods.
For the rest of dinner, we don't discuss the dance anymore. We talk about my performance in Times Square mostly, everyone giving their opinions and feedback on how they thought my singing was. Then, we all help clean up the kitchen and dining room before deciding to watch a movie.
"What kind of movie are you guys interested in?" Dad asks, turning the tv on.
"I'm not picky," Dani says, sitting down on the couch next to Kevin and snuggling into him as he puts an arm around her.
"Guys, you're making me feel very single right now," I say, getting a laugh out of everyone.
"That's what you get for what you pulled before with the music," Kevin says with a smirk, and I shrug in defeat.
"Guess that makes sense."
We end up settling on Soul Surfer, and the movie begins. Grabbing a pillow and blanket off the couch, I camp out on the floor and get comfortable, half watching the movie and half in my thoughts. Day 1 in LA was an ultimate success, so I guess we'll just have to see what the rest of the week brings. But if it goes anything like today did, this is going to be the greatest seven days.
