Finding a Home

Monty drives for a few miles until they reach a place called Old State. It's in the vicinity of a small rural town called Waterford. In the road, they drive until Daryl sees a house with a huge barn, a fenced in back yard and a garage with kennels attached.

"Pull in there Monty. Looks like it could be good." Daryl claims and Monty pulls in and they look at the house from the window. When they park in the first small driveway, Beth holds the kids, checking to see if they're okay. "Imma go run the house and garage. Stay here."

"Daryl..." Beth sits up and is ready to go, but Daryl looks at her with stern eyes and a tight lipped expression. She sits back against the seat and just glowers at him.

Going up onto to porch, Daryl knocks on the door and waits. After he gets the clear, he walks in and disappears for several minutes. The wait is killing Beth, but soon Daryl reemerges and gives them the hold on finger. He checks the barn and then the garage with the kennel attached. After several more minutes, he comes back to the truck an waves them in.

"House is clear. Three bedrooms, Two bathrooms. Good sized basement. And Paul, you even got a tree house now." Paul bounces in his seat and they all get out of the car. Unpacking everything, the dogs are put in the garage while Monty sets up supplies in the kitchen. The whole house is utterly spotless besides what you'd expect to be there. Toys over flow the you box, wine in the cellar, and food in the pantry. Daryl found some hunting supplies and the den is filled with movies and blankets.

As Judith and Paul play in the toys, Beth lays on the bed off the living room, eyes closed and stomach turning. Rushing up to her, Paul shows her a new toy he found.

"That's cool. Why don't you go show grandpa...mommy needs to rest. Take Judy with you..." Paul rushes away with the toy and she can faintly see him and Judy walk to the kitchen. Rolling onto her back, she covers her eyes and feels her forehead-warm and beginning to have a headache.

"Hey, you okay?" Daryl says from the doorway.

"Yeah. I'm just tired..." Coming into the room, he sits on the edge I the bed and places his hand on her hip. Rubbing it, he looks in her eyes and feels her forehead.

"Coming down with something...I'll go get you some water..." Kissing her forehead he leaves momentarily and then comes back with some aspirin and water. "Here, take this."

Helping her sit up, she puts the pills in her mouth and takes a drink. Laying back down Daryl goes and shuts the door. Coming back, he kicks off his boots and lays behind her holding her close to him. He kisses behind her ear and plays with her hands on her stomach.

"I love you." He kisses her neck and she turns over in his arms and kisses his lips. "I love you..."

"Daryl..." She kisses him and lays her head against her chest. "Can e really stay here?"

"I think so... I'll just start putting up fencing around the house and we'll be good. Got the supplies in the barn." His hand slips under her shirt and lays on her stomach. "There's already a fences in yard for the kids....a field for farming. We'll be okay here."

"Good...I don't think I can take any more moving."

"Well then I guess I better get started securing this place." Kissing her a few more times he stands up and covers her oht the blanket before leaving. Beth rolls onto her side and the room just starts spinning.

Working on the fencing, Daryl starts digging holes while Monty starts putting in the posts. They get several posts in the ground an begin putting up the chicken wire and the Barb-wired fencing also. The top of the fences come up about two feet over Daryl's height. They get as far as the second long driveway before they start. Going up on the deck connected to the kitchen, they sit down and Daryl hands Monty a water bottle.

"Thanks fer helpin' man. Wouldn't have got this far if ya didn't help."

"Ain't nothing. I need to pull my own weight as much as you and Beth. How is Beth by the way?"

"Has a slight fever, but she's takin aspirin and a nap." He stands up and helps Monty up.

"Aren't you worried about her turning? Isn't that how it works?"

"She's immune...doesn't turn....She's gonna be fine." Going inside, Monty doesn't question Daryl's believes. As they go into the kitchen, Paul and Judy are screaming and crying.

"Mama!!!!" Racing toward the sound, Daryl an Monty find them in the bathroom. Beth is unconscious on the floor and the kids hunker over her trying to get her to wake up.

"Beth! Monty, get them out of here." Picking up the kids Monty takes them upstairs and Daryl can feel her skin on fire. The only thing he can think to do is lay her in the bath tub and turn on the cool water. As the cool water pours into the tub, he splashes some in her face and soon se jerks awake, but still seems hazy.

"What happened?" She says groggily as Daryl kisses her forehead and pours more water of her.

"You passed out. Yer really hot Beth...we need to cool you down."

After she gets dried off, Daryl carries her to bed and finds her shorts and a tank top to wear. He dresses her and as he does, leaves little kisses all over her skin. Her head is spinning and she can't begin to feel good. Tucking her in under a sheet, he lays beside her and she feels worse than anything else.

"Daryl..."

"Yeah, Baby?"

"If I don't..."

"Beth stop." He gives her a worried look. He doesn't want to believe this.

"Daryl...if I turn I need you to put me down."

"No. Yer gonna be fine. Okay, yer immune. You have two little kids out there, expecting you to play with them in the morning...Yer gonna be okay." She can see him starting to get upset and she places her hand on his cheek.

"Daryl, you have to....we're not guaranteed anything in this life...promise me.." She says as she begins to fall asleep.

"I...I promise, Beth." He kisses her as she closes her eyes and falls asleep in his arms.

Laying down, he begins to cry. He doesn't want to believe she's gonna turn. He doesn't want to have to put her down. He stays up all night, holding her close and sobbing until he ha no more tears left.
