"What's the matter? Why do you need help?" Noah asked through the phone. I began telling the entire story that I had just told to Officer Jack. Noah stayed silent the entire time as my words slowly turned into tears.
"So can you please come meet me in the gender neutral bathroom? I need you."
"Antha, maybe we should meet somewhere else. Chaperones might get the wrong idea, you know."
"Yeah," I chuckled through my tears. "Ok, can you meet me in the courtyard?"
"Yeah, of course. I'll start walking now."
"Ok, thank you so much," I whispered.
"I love you."
"Love you more." I hung up my phone and looked into the mirror. My makeup was destroyed, but I didn't even care. I turned off the light and walked out of the bathroom and towards the courtyard exit. That's when I saw just about the last person I wanted to see: Viv.
"Sam, what happened?" she asked concerned.
"Nothing, don't worry about it," I said shaking it off and continuing to walk.
"Sam!" Viv called. I reluctantly turned around.
"Are you ok?" she asked with a heartfelt expression across her face. I nodded.
"I am," I told her. "I'm going now to talk to Noah about...what just happened. I'll tell you later."
"Noah Schnapp right?" she asked. I nodded. "Ok good. He's much better at listening and advice and stuff than Noah Kaller," she finished. I chuckled, waved and kept walking. A few people were sitting on the chairs in the lobby and I saw them look at me, but they probably assumed my date left me or something...Which isn't entirely untrue. Finally, I reached the door and pushed it open. The music from the gym played gently through the windows. I saw a figure in my peripheral vision and turned to see Noah. He was looking at me with big eyes and a sad expression. He immediately walked up to me and hugged me. Nothing feels better than being in the arms of your best friend when you feel like the world is falling apart.
"It's ok," he whispered in my ear as I tightened my grip around him. "It's ok." After a few more seconds, we separated. "Come here," Noah said softly, gesturing to a bench. I follow his lead and sat down next to him and he put his arm around me. "Are you feeling ok?" he asked. I shook my head.
"I mean, I'm ok but I'm just so mad at James," I explained.
"Of course you are," Noah said. "You have every right to be. And sorry, it was a little hard to hear over the phone, did you see him put something in your cup?"
"No, Pandora Morgan did," I explained. "she warned me." He nodded.
"That makes more sense," he said. I looked to him confused.
"Why?" I asked.
"Well, you've kinda been so obsessed with James that you've been oblivious to all the jerky stuff he's been doing," he shrugged. Ouch.
"I haven't been obsessed with him," I defended. "And what exactly has he been doing besides this?"
"He's just a jerk!" Noah laughed.
"I really don't get it!" I exclaimed. "Like, I know he's a bad person now, but before he seemed so cool, why did you hate him so much?" I noticed my voice rising in volume.
"Maybe you thought he was cool, but literally nobody else did."
"What?" I exclaimed.
"Me, Chloe, Jordan, Julia, we all hated him! And Kaller only liked him for Andrew's mansion." Now Noah's voice was getting louder.
"I don't know why you can never be happy for me!" I scoffed. "You even gave me shit when I dated Kaller but you guys became best friends the second we broke up!"
"I'm just looking out for you!" He defended himself. "Kaller was a jerk and so was James."
"Ok, but it's not your job to choose who I can and can't be with!" I exploded. We were both talking so quickly that there was virtually no time in between each of our arguments.
"Well seeing that you invited James to the dance, you clearly need some help!"
"Who else was I supposed to ask? He was nice, fun, cute AND he liked me!"
"Yeah well I can think of someone just like that!" Noah pointed out.
"Who?" I asked annoyed.
"Me!" We both went silent when we realized what he had just said. I could practically hear the regret in his voice.
"Well...you were going with Julia," I said in a much slower, quieter tone. There was another pause.
"Maybe you should've asked me before she did," he shrugged. Pause.
"Maybe I didn't know you wanted me to," I mumbled while looking down. I heard Noah sigh quietly.
"Well, um... is Officer Jack coming?" he asked changing the subject.
"He said he was," I told him. "Even though James probably left already." Noah nodded. "Where's Julia?" I asked.
"Oh, I told her what you told me and she got really upset and went home," he said sadly.
"Aw, I feel so bad. She was really looking forward to tonight," I frowned.
"It's ok, Jordan's mom was taking both of them I think. They were gonna hang out."
"I hope Jordan can cheer her up," I shrugged.
"She will," Noah assured me. "she can cheer anyone up. Maybe you should've called her instead." I laughed and shook my head.
"I just hope I don't get killed for turning James in," I groaned still kind of laughing- Probably to subconsciously ease the pain.
"He'll get what he deserves," Noah told me.
"I hope."
"And listen, you were right," he sighed. "James wasn't a jerk when we first met him. I was just... protective or...jealous, I guess."
"You were right too," I added. "I should've asked you to go with me." We both went quiet as we thought of how different this moment would be if I had just made the right choice to begin with. I heard the (way too loud) music from the dance floor. Perfect by Ed Sheeran came on and I knew what I had to do. I stood up and held out my hand to Noah. "Noah, will you go to Sadie Hawkins with me?" I asked half laughing. He chuckled gently and smiled.
"Of course," he said warmly as he took my hand. "May I have this dance?" he asked as he gestured to the music in the air.
"I'd be delighted," I said in a fancy voice. He laughed quietly and put his hands on my waist. I placed my hands on his shoulders and we started swaying with the music. "Is what you said before true?" I asked. I almost immediately regretted it.
"The 'me' thing right?" he asked, clearly embarrassed. I nodded. "Well...yeah."
"Ok," I said smiling gently.
"I mean, it's weird," he started. "Like, we've been so close for so long... I feel like I really shouldn't feel this way... Like I feel disgusting."
"Ok, that's enough," I cut him off with my eyes wide. He laughed.
"You know what I mean," he groaned. "Like, I've always said you're like my sister, but I don't know if I feel like that anymore." I nodded. "Does that make sense?"
"Trust me it makes sense, I've been feeling it since you got home," I shook my head. We continued swaying with the music.
"You have?" he asked. I made direct eye contact with him and nodded.
"So, now what?" he asked. I thought for a moment. I thought of all of the barbecues and family vacations. The sleepovers and all nighters. I didn't want them to change.
"Now nothing," I shook my head. "later maybe." He somehow knew exactly what I was saying and nodded.
"Wow," he whispered. I looked to him confused. "Even with mascara all over your face, you're the most perfect girl I've ever seen." I sighed but smiled.
"Thank you," I laughed shaking my head.We danced the rest of the night.
