I whipped around and saw the familiar blonde hair and tanned skin. "James!" I smiled. He walked closer and I saw he had a red solo cup in his hand.
"what's up?" he asked. "Did you come with the gang?" Chloe cringed.
"Yep," she said bluntly.
"You come with Andrew?" I asked. He nodded.
"You guys have the best parties. Couldn't miss it." He took a sip from the cup. "Anyway, do you wanna hang? The yard is so cool."
"Well, sure," I responded.
"I'll have to pass," Chloe said. "I'm gonna head on inside but don't do anything I wouldn't do," she warned James.
"Think I've already broken that rule Chlo," he laughed. She just shook her head and walked away. I don't know why Chloe doesn't like James. Sure, he's not her type or whatever, but he's pretty nice. "Well, Samantha, do you wanna go hang out?" I smiled and nodded. We walked down from the area by the door to the pool, which took much longer that you would imagine. We sat on the edge and dipped our feet into the cool water.
"So, why do you come here every summer?" I asked.
"Well, my dad and I came here two years ago because my parents were going through a nasty divorce," he explained.
"Oh, I'm so sorry," I told him. He shook his head.
"My mom was pretty awful. Since I was born we were basically waiting for her to give up on us, so it was almost a relief when they signed the forms," he sighed. "but anyway, we came to New York and stayed with my uncle, Andrew's dad while my parents figured everything out legally. And I don't know, I guess it's yearly now."
"I'm really sorry about your parents," I sighed. "But it's cool you get to spend time with Andrew. Do you finish school earlier than us or something?" He has come to Scarsdale two weeks before we finished. He must be pretty bored.
"Yeah, I finished like two weeks ago," he told me. "my dad and I mostly go to the city while Andrew's at school since I don't live that close."
"Oh, that's so fun!" I exclaimed. "I love NYC."
"We should go sometime," he smiled. "you can give me the 'New Yorker' tour." I chuckled.
"I'd be honored." He smiled gently and subtly put his hand over mine. I laughed to myself and adjusted my hand to hold his. "Hey," I said. I don't know what came over me, but I started to talk. "Do you know what a Sadie Hawkins dance is?" I asked. He nodded.
"Isn't that the thing your school does?" he checked. "Like, girls ask guys?" I nodded.
"It's kind of dumb, but it's a tradition," I explained. "Anyway... do you wanna... be dumb together?" He looked at me half confused, half completely understanding.
"Elaborate for me?" he laughed.
"Do you wanna go with me?" I sighed that he made me say it. He laughed at me gently and nodded.
"Yeah, yeah I'd love to."
"Awesome," I smiled. "It's next Friday at 7. Meet at my house at...6:45?" He nodded.
"Perfect." We both sat there for a second just smiling. Very awkward. 0/10 don't recommend.
"Well, I should probably find Chloe," I remembered. "Let her know I'm alive and stuff." He laughed, stood up and held his hand out to me. I mistakenly grabbed on and he tossed me over into the pool. I felt myself submerge under then float to the top.
"James!" I screamed. He was laughing but he looked guilty.
"I'm sorry!" he laughed. "I had to!" I shook my head fake angrily.
"Help me out!" I exclaimed and extended my hand. He grabbed on and I yanked him in with me. I saw him rise to the top with his jaw dropped.
"Samantha!" He laughed.
"Payback," I winked.
