"Yeah, James was saying some messed up stuff about Sam, so Noah got mad," Andrew explained avoiding James' angry gaze. "I probably would've reacted the same way if I was in his situation."
"Well, there was still no reason for Noah to get physical," Mr. Hilton argued. He knew he had lost. He'd chosen the wrong witness.
"It was barely a fight," Andrew pointed out. "James walked out with a scratch. And Noah didn't frame James. I saw the drugs."
"So you're saying you take Noah's side?" Mr. Hilton asked defeated. Andrew nodded quickly.
"Family first my ass," James muttered."Andrew," Noah started as we stepped outside. "Thank you so so much."
"It's nothing," he shrugged. "I'm really sorry about everything James did, and I'm sorry I stuck with him for so long. He's my family, you know?" I nodded.
"I hope he doesnt get into too much trouble," Julia lied. Andrew nodded, but I could tell he wanted James to get what he deserves.
"I just wish the judge let us stay in to hear James' punishment," he smiled gently.
"Me too," I chuckled. "But, yeah, thanks so much." Andrew nodded.
"There's one way you can repay me," he said.
"What?" I asked.
"Well, actually two things- there's no way my uncle is gonna give me a ride home now, so maybe a ride?"
"Yeah," I responded. "Yeah, of course. And what else?"
"Maybe..." he started. "I could take you out sometime?" I felt my mouth drop as if I were about to respond. What was I supposed to say? He and his cousin had been the cause of so much awful stuff for the past few weeks, but he also did just get us out of all this trouble. It's almost as if he read my thoughts when he spoke again.
"I know it's kinda weird because of what just happened, but I think you're really cool, and we could just go get some coffee, or ice cream or something... Only if it's ok with you."
"Yeah, I think it'd be ok," I nodded half smiling. I could see relief and happiness fill his eyes.
"Awesome," he smiled. "Whenever you want. You let me know." I nodded again and giggled. He's so dorky. I saw my parents, Viv, and the rest of my friends parents talking. By my mom's surprised expression, I could tell Mrs. Raskin was filling her in on all the details of what had just happened. A few seconds later, my mom walked over and immediately hugged me. She then hugged Noah. She looked like she even wanted to hug Andrew, but she just turned to him and smiled.
"Thank you so much Andrew," she smiled gently, almost scared that he was just like James.
"Of course," he responded. "I'm really sorry."
"Don't be," my mom shook her head. "I know how hard it is to turn against family in times like these."
"Speaking of which," I interrupted. "Can we drive Andrew home?" My mom's eyes unwillingly widened a little. She seemed extremely skeptical.
"Um, yes, of course," she finally mumbled. "Yeah, yeah that's fine."
"Thank you so much Mrs. Marcus," Andrew gushed. I could tell that he was so out of it he barely knew what he was saying. He seemed like he had just broken free from a pair of handcuffs- the handcuffs being James.
"Well, why don't we get going?" my mom suggested, still a little frazzled. I nodded. "Bye Noah, bye Julia," she waved. They waved back.
"Bye," I smiled hugging Julia. I then turned to Noah and went to hug him. He loosely wrapped his arms around me and didn't say anything. I separated and looked at him confused. He sent me an annoyed confused look.
"See ya," he said and nodded off. Julia followed him.The ride home with Andrew was quiet. We talked a little, but it was weird. Sure, he really helped me out, but he had still been on James' side. I wasn't sure how I was feeling about this date that I had stupidly agreed to. We dropped Andrew off, and headed back inside. Kathleen called my mom and told her that James was assigned community service hours, he was fined (she wouldn't tell me how much) and this whole situation was going on his permanent record. I felt like that was fair.
I immediately grabbed my phone to call Noah and tell him the news. I knew Karine wouldn't tell him. "Hey siri," I started as I quickly left my phone to grab an apple. "FaceTime Noah."
"FaceTiming Noah Schnapp," my phone responded. I picked it up and ran up to my room. Within a few seconds, he answered. His hair was wet and he had a loose tshirt on. He clearly just got out of the shower.
"Hey," I smiled. "Guess what."
"What?" he asked dryly.
"James got community service hours, he was fined, and his permanent record is screwed up."
"Nice," Noah responded.
"That's it?" I asked. "Nice?"
"Well it just seems like you're getting real close to James' side again," he shrugged.
"What are you talking about?" I asked confused.
"When's your date with Andrew?" My jaw dropped and I rolled my eyes.
"You're joking," I scoffed. "That's why you're pissed off?"
"I'm not pissed off, I'm just annoyed because you're going out with the guy who's the closest to being James without actually being him."
"I'm just getting ice cream or something with him," I explained shaking my head. "He's liked me for years and he helped us," I reminded him. Noah shook his head and scoffed. "Dude," I said as Noah closed his eyes.
"You can't just use Andrew as a rebound," he said with his eyes still closed.
"I'm not," I defended. "I'm literally just hanging out with him once to like keep the peace." Noah nodded but he didn't look convinced.
"Ok, ok fine," he gave in.
"Fine," I said quietly.
"Well, it's good that Iames got what he deserved." I nodded. "Chloe's calling me, gotta go."
"Bye," I started. He hung up before I could finish. That was bull. I quickly picked up my phone and called Chloe. She also answered within seconds.
"Hey," she smiled. "Sup?" She reached into a bag of pretzels and pulled one out.
"Noah's pissed at me," I answered.
"Why?" she asked with a pretzel in her mouth.
"I told Andrew I'd get ice cream or something with him," I answered hoping she'd realize how dumb Noah was being; she didn't.
"Why'd you do that?" she asked confused.
"Well, he helped us," I reminded her. "And he said that was a way I could repay him." Chloe paused and then nodded slowly.
"Antha, you are ridiculous," she shook her head. She looked so much like Noah right now. The mannerisms were identical.
"Not you too," I groaned. "I'm not gonna let it mean anything, I'm just trying to keep the peace."
"No, oh my god," Chloe groaned putting her head in her hands. She then shook her head quickly and composed herself, looking straight into the camera . "You need to stop messing with Noah. It's ridiculous."
"What?" I asked scoffing. Why were they both being so confusing.
"First, you ask James to Sadie Hawkins. Now, you're going over to Andrew. I know it doesn't mean anything, but it's not fair to lead Noah on and then do this." My eyes grew wide. I couldn't get any words out. She must have realized this because she immediately began her explanation. "I'm not stupid Antha," she rolled her eyes. "I have eyes. And ears. I know you guys like eachother and I watch you guys act like boyfriend and girlfriend and trust me it's kinda gross to see, but if you're gonna do it, then commit full time."
"Noah and I do NOT act like boyfriend and girlfriend," I defended.
"There's a line where it stops being 'cute best friends' and you've passed it," Chloe shook her head. I really had no comment. "And you wanna know how I know there's something going on with you two?"
"Be my guest," I responded.
"I said 'i know you guys like eachother' and you didn't deny it."whoops.
