May 1st 1968

A few weeks had passed and Paul arrived home late one evening.

"Hello darling" Amelia called from the living room.

She didn't hear him say a word and eventually he appeared standing in front of her. He had an exhausted look on his face with a slight frown.

"Are you alright dear?" She asked concerned.

Paul swallowed and stared off into the distance before suddenly covering his face with his hands. He sighed and began to cry, much to Amelia's surprise. She jumped up from where she was sat and placed her hand on his back.

"Oh Paul! What is the matter?" She said slightly frightened at his emotional demeanour.

He turned his face into her chest as she cradled him tenderly. She stroked his hair as he sobbed a little. She didn't ask anymore questions and allowed him some time to collect his thoughts. She didn't know what was wrong, but she knew he just needed some love.

"It's been so hard, Lia" He mumbled still buried in her chest.

"I'm not sure how long I can stand it" he continued after a few sniffs.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Amelia asked softly and he nodded.

Paul finally revealed his pink face with wet eyes and messy hair. They made their way to the sofa and sat down together. Paul wiped his face with his hands and rested his elbows on his knees.

"It's been really stressful in the studio this week," Paul started "well if I'm completely honest, it's been stressful since we started recording again"

Amelia felt terrible as she knew, probably more than anyone, how much he adored making music and spending time recording with the boys.

"John's got this new bird" he stated.

Amelia was taken back, "Already? I knew him and Cynthia had separated but I had no idea he had found someone so soon".

"Apparently he has been seeing her for months. Turns out India didn't fix their marriage, if anything it made it worse" Paul said.

"So who is she?" Amelia asked wondering who he could possibly be romantically involved with now.

"She's some artist called Yoko Ono."

Amelia unfortunately recognised the name and was thrown back to that time in the studio with John.

"She's barking mad Lia. I just can't see how she's helping John artistically or musically at all" he said honestly.

"But he's in love with her, which is what makes this situation so frustrating" he continued trying to hold back his tears once again.

"He's my best friend. I don't want to lose him over this. I just thought he liked our agreement".

"What do the other boys think of her being there?" Amelia asked curiously.

Paul sighed, "They haven't said much really. I think we're all starting to feel the tension though. Ringo seemed very off with us today come to think of it. I did get quite frustrated with his playing yesterday".

Amelia's heart broke for him. She hated seeing him in despair - it was a rare sight.

"But perhaps it's just me. Maybe I've got a problem and I just need to focus on the music more" he said shrugging.

Amelia was torn, "I think you have every right to be upset, Paul. It's understandable that you feel frustrated by it all. You made an agreement, and he's going against it. But I think what you've got to think about is, is it worth arguing about? And would it make a difference if you were to?"

Paul agreed with her and truly appreciated her opinion on the matter.

"You're right, Lia. Besides, we probably only have a month left of recording anyway. We've made some good stuff so far, very different from Yellow Submarine" he said in a more positive tone.

She laughed a little, "I'm still very surprised how quickly you put out that record. The orchestral tracks were very complex"

"Well, I suppose that's the genius of George Martin" he said smiling a little.

Amelia smiled back at him, seeing his usual self appear again.

"I'm very excited for it Paul" she said.

"Me too. It's going to be huge" he said.

"Well, you do say that every time Paul!" Amelia replied laughing.

"No, I mean it literally. It's going be a double album" he informed her.

Amelia was baffled, "A double album? Is that even possible?".

"We broke boundaries with the last few, why not go even further" he said becoming enthusiastic again.

He stood up from where they were sat, "Think I'm going to head to bed. It's quite late".

Amelia checked her watch, "You're right. Let's go to sleep".
