"You're bossy..."

Reon paused, looking up from where he had been rummaging through the papers in the desk drawer, and glanced at the figure lounged in the chair on the other side of the room. Yamagata's face was flushed, his usually narrow eyes wide and unfocused.

"What?" Reon asked.

Yamagata looked up, shrugging his shoulders as he gestured outward with his hands. "You're bossy, and a brick wall, a fuzzy brick wall..." he trailed off, chuckling slightly at his own words.

Reon's eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Are you drunk."

Yamagata scoffed, as if what Reon had just said was absolutely ridiculous. "Yeah. So?"

Reon smacked one hand against forehead, dragging it down his face in disappointment. "I don't believe this. What possessed you to want to get drunk, we're on a job, Hayato! Where did you even get alcohol?"

Yamagata let out a hiccup, the frown on his face quirking into a small smile. "Uh," he drawled. "Found it."

"For fuck's sake, Hayato."

Reon sighed, abandoning his searching through the desk drawer as he turned fully and walked over to Yamagata. Yamagata looked up at him with a lazy smile. "Hey, babe. You come here often?"

Reon sighed again, ignoring Yamagata's attempt at a flirt and easily hoisting the smaller man to his feet with a yank of his arm. Yamagata giggled shrilly, gripping Reon's arm to steady himself. He laughed. "That was fun."

Reon allowed himself to smile a few seconds at his partner's silliness before he schooled his face back into the disappointed frown it had been before.

"Hayato, we can't keep doing this. He wouldn't want you doing this. I don't want you doing this."

Yamagata scowled, leaning into Reon's chest as the taller man threw his arm over his shoulder and started to gently drag him toward the door. Yamagata's feet scuffed against the floor as he fought against Reon. "How would you know what the damn kid would or would not want?" He muttered angrily. "He's dead. Been dead for a fucking while."

Reon swallowed, a thick lump of emotion stuck in his throat. "Because I knew him, Hayato. Just like you did."

Yamagata growled, now deliberately trying to fight against Reon's grip. He slapped weakly at his chest. "Like hell you did. He was mine and mine alone to raise. I was the big brother and father figure he didn't have. I was there for him! I loved him!"

Yamagata was yelling now, his hits to Reon's chest becoming harder and harder. Reon ignored his words despite the sting, determined to drag him back to Ushijima, or at least Semi, so he could sober up. (And maybe get some sense knocked into him.)

"Let go of me, Reon!" Yamagata shouted defiantly. "You wanna talk about what he would or would not want? Let's talk then! Come on, say something, you fucking coward!"

Reon set his jaw as he kicked opened the door with his foot, dragging Yamagata into the hallway and towards the elevator. He stayed silent, still ignoring Yamagata's jabs. Perhaps he pushed the down button a bit too forcefully, but he couldn't find it in himself to care anymore, not when both his and Yamagata's heart were hurting.

The door opened with a cheerful ding, and Reon practically threw Yamagata into the empty elevator, quick to follow after him and block his escape until the door closed.

Yamagata looked like a wild animal, his eyes smoldering with anger and his lip curled into a snarl. He wisely stayed in the corner, but remained defiant regardless. Reon stared him down.

"It's like you said, Hayato." He said quietly. "He's dead. He's gone. Why do you insist on destroying yourself by staying in the past?" He paused, turning away as tears burned at the back of his eyes. "Why do you insist on hurting me?"

At Reon's words, Yamagata's face softened slightly, his snarl disappearing as he bites his lip. He looks away, his own tears shining in his dark eyes. "He was just a kid..." he mumbled. "A kid that didn't do anything. Why, why did it have to happen to him?" His voice cracked, and he turned back to Reon, looking up at him. "Why, Reon...?"

Reon sniffed, the tears finally running freely down his face. "I wish I knew, Hayato. I wish I knew..."

Yamagata's face crumpled. He choked on a sob as he slid down the elevator wall, landing on the floor with a dull thump. He covered his face with both hands, curling into a ball as his body shook with the force of his sobs.

Reon was quick to crouch beside him, gently gripping his partner's shoulders. "Hayato, please." He said, his voice desperate. "I'm begging you. Just let it go. I love you, and I just want you to be ok. Please."

Yamagata looked up at him, his face red and blotchy with tears. "I... I love you too, Reon." He whispered. "I'm sorry. I'm so fucking sorry. I'm sorry I'm such a mess right now, crying over a kid that's been dead for so long..."

Reon laughed weakly, moving both his hands up to cradle his partner's face lovingly. "Then I guess we're both messes, Hayato."

Yamagata laughed as well, pushing their foreheads together as he closed his eyes, the tears still streaming heavily down his face. He wrapped his arms around Reon's middle, pulling him closer.

"Yeah," he replied. "I guess we are..."
