Kageyama's been the new leader of the gang for about a week, and he's absolutely fine, thank you very much.

There's a maybe sort of graphic (but not really??) mention of blood. Be careful my nerds.

Anyway enjoy y'all.

Kageyama is playing chess with Miyamoto. Which is surprising, since neither of them, Miyamoto especially, knew a damn thing about how to play it.

"I was good at this game before I met you, y'know kid," he says as Kageyama takes piece after piece from Miyamoto's side of the chess board, and collects them into a neat pile on his right side. He keeps taking pieces, and the pile gets bigger and bigger until it flows off of the table and onto the floor. Miyamoto's hand reaches out, pale and slender fingers sliding a white piece across the board, smearing dark red blood across the squares.

"Fuck, kid," he says, despite the fact that his mouth is so bloody, the liquid dribbles thickly down his chin and onto the table and floor, and his teeth are stained red. "I wouldn't have died for you if I'd known that you were gonna fuck everything that I built for you up. The fuck's wrong with you?"

"I just want to sleep," Kageyama says, and his voice comes out like a whine.

"You are sleeping, you little brat," Miyamoto says. "And you aren't supposed to be. So wake up."

And Kageyama obeys. His eyes open as if Miyamoto is forcibly prying his eyelids apart. His breathing and heart rate are a bit faster than normal, but he supposes that it could be worse with how detached he feels from his own body. The clock on the dresser shines the time 2:45 AM back at him in bright red writing. He blinks once, stares at the clock for another moment or two, then decidedly rolls over and wills himself to go back to sleep.

He wakes up again what feels like hours later. The clock tells him that it's 3:00 AM. Apprehensively, Kageyama reminds himself that he's only slept a total of about ten hours in the past week. He's glad that Kindaichi and Nishinoya are off doing recon for territory they've been scouting. He doesn't want to have to put up with Kindaichi's disappointed kicked puppy look and Nishinoya's pointed comments about his temper.

Allowing himself a small, tired sigh, Kageyama slides out of bed and sets about checking the hideout. He makes sure his knife and gun are still underneath his pillow, unlocks and locks the door and windows four times (like Miyamoto taught him), organizes the papers he left on his desk last night, and reminds himself after checking the fridge to tell Kindaichi to tell Asahi and Nishinoya they need to go to the grocery store again soon.

When he return to his bedroom, the clock tells him 3:30 AM. His eyes feel like someone is forcibly shoving their thumbs into the sockets. He decides to climb back into bed, closes his eyes, and tosses and turns for what feels like an eternity. He wakes up again, and looks at his clock. 4:10 AM. He thinks that if he gets up now and starts getting ready, his men will already be awake and about by the time he actually leaves the hideout.

His mind - which had been feeling nothing but sluggish as of late - sharpens instantly to provide him with several reasons why he shouldn't get up and get ready. He's fairly ahead on his paperwork. It would be great way to test how efficient his men would be without him. He's the boss and he can do what he wants. He's only fourteen and he's stressed-

He can handle it. Resolutely, he gets up and starts getting ready. Despite the fact that he actually takes the time to brush his hair for once, he still looks absolutely terrible. The bags under his eyes are deep and purple, and his eyes while still sharp and narrow, carry a tiredness that he knows someone his age should never have to carry. He wants to sleep so badly that he actually considers banging his head against the wall until he goes to sleep the hard way.

It's a stupid thought, he knows.

He just shakes his head and starts in his way to the main hideout.
