Kageyama's foot hits the ground, then his other foot. Up. Down. Up. Down. Left. Right. Left. Right. Over and over and over and over. It's a comforting mantra, and one he desperately needs right now as he continues to pace the length of the empty room.

"They said the bullet managed to miss his heart... But there's still a chance he could bleed out when they remove it."

No.

No, Kindaichi was alive. He had to be. He was not going to accept anything else.

He paces the room a bit more, not sure what he's expecting. The survivors of the terf war are coming back soon, and he has no idea what he'll do if he doesn't see Kindaichi among them.

Darkness. Nothing but shadows. Slim bodies slinking along the wall. Hushed, nervous breaths. The quiet click of a gun, the glint of a knife. He holds his hand up, everything goes silent. He waits.

For just a moment, he closes his eyes, and breathes. He thinks of amber eyes and a razor sharp grin, of the alpha wolf that took a chance on the little street mutt. For just a moment, he hears a familiar raspy bark of laughter and smells the heavy scent of cigarette smoke.

"You're the leader now, mutt. So fucking act like it."

He brings his hand down.

After that, it's a chaotic mess of flashing lights, loud shouting and gunshots. In the end, he and what was left of his people were forced to retreat, slinking further back into their territory as the gloating yells of the enemy sound off in the distance.

In the end... Kindaichi gets shot.

In the end, Kageyama remembers that he's still fourteen. And that no matter what was expected of him by the alpha wolf, he's still just a dirty, little street mutt.

The sound of the door opening startles him, and his hand is already reaching for his gun when he sees a familiar head of slicked back hair enter through the doorway.

Nishinoya, despite having stitches on one cheek, grins widely at him, and energetically waves his non bandaged arm. Kageyama snorts quietly at the display before his mouth morphs back into a frown. He looks at Nishinoya expectantly.

Instead of answering him, Nishinoya's grin widens even further, and he steps (more like prances though) further into the apartment, leaving the door wide open behind him. Kageyama just raises an annoyed eyebrow at him.

"Nishinoya, what the fu-"

Then, in the distance-

"Ow, shit..."

"C-careful now, Kindaichi..."

"I am being careful, dickbag. Just hurry up and get me up these stairs before I jump over the railing and finish what those guys started."

Kageyama's head turns so fast his neck pops. His feet move on their own, covering the short distance to the door in no time at all. Clutching the wood of the doorframe in one hand like a lifeline, he leans his upperbody out into the hallway.

The first thing he sees is the ugly lime green shirt that Kindaichi's wearing. Then, his gaze travels upwards, catching a glimpse of white bandages underneath the shirt collar before finally settling onto dark, narrowed eyes.

His heart stops as he watches Kindaichi – his strong, powerful second in command – lean heavily into Azumane's side, one arm wrapped around the larger's man's shoulders. His mouth moves.

"K-Kindaichi..."

Kindaichi offers him a weak smile, slowly raising his free arm to wave at Kageyama. "Glad to finally see ya... boss."
