Is this technically a song fic? I'm only partially sure about what's going here, so I dunno. I wanted to write some TanaKiyo so badly, and apparently writer's block decided it's been kicking my ass enough lately. So I kicked its ass right back. I hope you guys enjoy and please tell me what you think!!!!!!!
(Based slightly off the song: What About Now by Daughtry. Give it a listen!)

Sometimes Tanaka wondered why Kiyoko had picked him.
In high school, she had her choice of boys (and girls) fawning over her, worshipping the ground she walked on, same as him. And many of them were, in his own opinion, much better than himself. More handsome, more beautiful, less brutish, not as loud. He could go on and on.
But somehow, for some reason, Kiyoko ended up choosing him.
He wouldn't dare ask her why, he didn't want to be the cause of the rift that he knew would eventually become between him and her. He wanted to stay with her as long as she would have him.
The sun is breaking in your eyes
To start a new day...
There were mornings, lazy, weekend mornings, that they would just lay in bed. Kiyoko would be curled up at his side, one arm resting gently on his chest with her face half buried in his neck, her warm, gentle breath tickling his skin. He would have one arm wrapped carefully around her back, keeping her as close as possible as he stared up at the ceiling of their apartment, his face flushed. And they would just stay like that, silently basking in each other's embrace for hours and hours until she decided to get up and make breakfast.
This broken heart can still survive
With a touch of your grace...
Kiyoko wasn't big on showing affection, even when they were alone, Tanaka knew this. So anytime she kissed him, he made sure to remember exactly when and where she kissed him (she often only kissed him on his right cheek and his forehead, they hadn't kissed on the lips yet, but Tanaka wasn't giving up hope on that happening just yet) so he could treasure it for a long time afterwards.
Shadows fade into the light
I am by your side, where love will find you...
Tanaka had been told so many times that he should just leave her. That it was obvious she was only staying with him for her own personal gain, and that their "relationship" was one sided. He refused to listen to the accusations, and often got violent when the accusers persisted. Kiyoko always told him that he shouldn't be getting into fights like that over something so small.
The accusations continued to pile up, but Tanaka stayed at Kiyoko's side, his love for her never wavering.
What about now, what about today?
What if you're making me all that I was meant to be?
"Kiyoko-san, I love you, you know that right?" The words came tumbling out before he could stop himself, and suddenly he just couldn't seem to stop. "I love you so much, Kiyoko-san. You make me feel like a better person, better than what I was in high school. The wild and violent number five on Karasuno's boys volleyball team. You changed a lot of me, for the better."
What if our love never went away?
What if it's lost behind words we could never find?
Kiyoko's back was facing him. Her hair was loose and flowing, still as soft and silky looking as it was in high school. She didn't turn around. She didn't need to turn around. He knew what she was saying, even without her saying any words. He came up to stand beside her, carefully reaching out for her hand with his own, waiting with bated breath to see if, despite her body language, Kiyoko would react negatively.
Baby, before it's too late...
He cautiously twined his fingers with her own, squeezing her hand gently. She did nothing for a moment or two, just standing with her back still to him.
Then, she turned her head, staring up at him with those soft, dark eyes. She squeezed his hand, turning fully so she was facing him, stood on her tip toes, and kissed him. His eyes widened, his jaw slack, too shocked to do anything but gape.
After a few seconds, she pulled back, her face flushed a light red, and smiled.
What about now?
