Shouyo flinched as thunder roared across the sky, his grip tight on the hilt of his sword as he hurried towards Aone.

Aone remained silent as Shouyo pressed against his side, staring off into the distance with his familiar blank expression. He wrapped a careful arm around his shoulders, pulling him closer until his cheek was pressed against the taller boy's ribs. He shivered despite the cloak draped over him.

The sky above them was a sheet of gray, rain gently drizzling down from the heavens. In the distance, the clouds were darker, so dark they looked purple, with lighting bolts swirling and flashing as they battled within the inky depths.

Shouyo yelped as thunder once again sounded across the valley and he clung tightly to his cloak, burying his face into Aone's side like a small child would with their mother.

"Are you quite sure you can do this, Hinata?"

Shouyo shuddered as Aone's hand rubbed gentle circles on his back. He removed his face from Aone's side for just a moment to look up at him.

"I-I'm just scared..." he admitted, his voice trembling. "I'm scared of all of this. I'm scared of fighting the Demon King, I'm scared of Kageyama fighting the Demon King, I'm scared of what could happen. Have I no right to be scared?"

"Of course you do." Aone replied. "Anyone would be scared in this situation."

"Not Kageyama." Shouyo muttered, if albeit bitterly. "Kageyama isn't scared of anything."

Aone hummed thoughtfully. "Do not be so quick to assume, Hinata. Everyone has fears, no matter how fearless they may seem."

Shouyo huffed irritably, despite the fact that he was still shaking in fear. "Fine then, what are you scared of?"

Aone remained silent for more than a few moments, staring up at the sky with a serious expression. "I..." he began, then trailed off, as if he was uncertain of what to say. Shouyo blinked up at him curiously, but remained silent as he waited for Aone to answer him. "I'm afraid... of losing my comrades. Frightened of ending up alone."

Shouyo blinked again, alarmed at being shown such vulnerability, especially from someone as quiet and secretive as Aone. He remembered the first few nights their little group of runaways had spent together. Aone looked so lost and confused, just staring ahead with a blank expression. He had flinched a lot too, recoiling away like he'd been struck if someone had touched or even so much as spoke to him. He was like a child back then, so frail and helpless.

"That's..." Shouyo trailed off, unsure of how exactly he was supposed to respond.

"It's ok to be afraid, Hinata." Aone mumbled softly, his hand stilling its ministrations but still remaining on his back. "Fear is normal. Especially with children."

Shouyo hid his face in Aone's side again, groaning loudly into the folds of his cloak. "You're a kid too, dummy..." he muttered, his face hot.

Aone just chuckled.

Shouyo stiffened when yet another thunder clap rolled through the air, making the very ground beneath his feet vibrate from the sheer intensity. He let out a labored breath, gripping his cloak so tightly his knuckles turned white. After a few moments, and with some difficulty, he finally managed to remove his face from Aone's side.

He hunched over slightly, grumbling quietly to himself. "Look at me, I might as well be a babe, clinging to you like a leech."

Aone's hand continued its previous movements, rubbing carefully along his back. "We must go soon, Hinata." He said. "Kozume and Kageyama are waiting."

"I'll be waiting, dumbass. However long it takes."

Shouyo grit his teeth, one hand unfurling from his chest to clutch the hilt of his sword. Kageyama had made it sound so easy, his blue eyes, so deep and majestic, yet so cold and hardened, just staring down at him as they always did. His mouth, still set in its usual tight frown. His mask of calmness, refusing to crack again even for someone like Shouyo.

"I'll be waiting too, idiot. Don't die."

Shouyo had stared up at him then, the fire to Kageyama's ice. His eyes had burned then, his chest swirling with warmth as he made sure Kageyama knew what he was feeling, the fear, the unease, all of the emotion that had been pushed down and locked away until it refused to be held down anymore.

Shouyo knew what Kageyama had said was true, however monotone his voice had been when he said it. He knew Kageyama cared for him, just as he cared for Kageyama.

"It's time to go, Hinata."

Thunder boomed.

Shouyo didn't flinch.
