The U.A Heroics course was a goddamn mess, Daichi ultimately decided. After about only three minutes into his first class. He would normally blame it all on the fact that his classmates were immature teenagers, but he reminded himself that this was a high school, and that everyone in high school was an immature teenager. (Except for him apparently.)
The General Education course had been different. The kids there had had an air of seriousness about them, with maybe just a hint of desperation. After all, they had all shared the same thought: I wish I was in a different course.
Of course, simply wishing didn't do a thing. Only two of their class - Daichi himself and another boy that he didn't remember the name of - had made it into the Heroics course. Everyone else in their class was stuck there, until the next sports festival, and until they had another chance to try again.
For better or for worse, this Heroics class was packed to the brim with people who got in at the very beginning, and those who managed to remain impressive enough at the sports festival to keep their spots. For better or for worse, this Heroics class was full of people who had proven themselves, people who were desperate to do so again.
As a textbook went sailing over his head, and the angry screams of one of his female classmates sounded right next to his ear, Daichi decided that the Heroics course was different because of a lot of things.
"Hey there, classmate." A hand snaked itself in front of Daichi's face, and he blinked a bit in surprise. His eyes lazily trailed up the offending limb, until he was met with the sight of the obnoxious looking boy it was attached to. The boy just smirked at him. "Kuroo Tetsurou. Nice to meet you."
Daichi stared blankly at him for a bit longer, wondering silently to himself why he was being subjected to this. "We've already met." He offers in response, rather than his own name or even a greeting in return.
"Eh, that doesn't count." Kuroo says, his expression unchanged. If anything, it became wider. "It was for a competition. Don't believe those manga, you can't make friends with a person you had a just had fight with."
"Then why are you trying to make friends with the guy you had a fight with? Besides, it actually does count. I beat you in the tournament."
As soon as the words left his mouth, Daichi grimaced inwardly, realizing too late that they had come out sounding quite arrogant. Regardless of its delivery, however, Daichi's statement held truth. He had destroyed Kuroo in the second round of the final event, shamelessly using the other teen as a stepping stone to his advancement. He knows he would be quite resentful if their positions were reversed, so he assumed that Kuroo would feel the same.
A couple of nearby students shifted in their seats as Kuroo's hand retreated, their angry glares stabbing into Daichi's back. He cursed inwardly to himself, he shouldn't have even opened his mouth. He'd only been here ten minutes - and here he was, already making enemies with his peers.
The sudden shrieking bark of laughter was so unexpected that Daichi startled a bit in his seat, a yelp catching in his throat. Kuroo's eyes crinkled happily as he threw his head back, letting out a single ugly snort before collapsing into giggles.
"Yeah!" He guffawed. "You got me real good, it was cool! I do need to work on being more flexible, huh? Sensei and Yakkun are always on my back about being too reliant on my quirk."
Daichi could only stare at him silently, his eyes wide in surprise.
Kuroo shook his head and giggled a bit more. "What," he prompted. "You didn't think I was gonna hold a grudge against you for handing my ass to me on a silver platter, did ya?" He raised his eyebrows. "Did ya...?"
"Ah. Yes." Daichi finally managed to reply. He glanced pointedly around the room, suddenly aware of all the unfriendly looks directed at him. Maybe Kuroo is popular, he wondered. Or maybe it's just because of that crazy laugh.
Kuroo's beaming grin weakened into a sheepish smile. He scratched the back of his head in embarrassment. "Aw, don't worry about them, dude. They'll come around. They're just upset you replaced Jirou, which does suck, but that ain't really your fault."
Daichi was once again at a loss for words. "Isn't it though?" He finally asked, unable to help himself. Jirou was the previous Heroics student placed into General Education because of him. No matter how you looked at it, Daichi was responsible for that.
"I mean, it ain't really your fault getting her kicked out anymore than it's our fault for making it so hard for you to get into Heroics in the first place." Kuroo said, glancing thoughtfully up at the ceiling. "It's all a competition, y'know? We all feel bad for Jirou, but she lost, y'know? Not much that anyone can do about that."
"Oh," Daichi replied softly. "I... didn't really think about it that way..."
His cheeks flushed a bit in embarrassment, feeling quite silly at the realization that this teenager with the hyena laugh and reputation for being a master of provocation had proved him wrong. Maybe Kuroo was cursed, maybe he was just weird.
Kuroo grinned again, further proving Daichi's point - teenagers in the Heroics course didn't really smile unless they had something stupid or provoking to say. "Well, you probably should!" His classmate exclaimed. "On that note, you wanna start over, man?"
For a few moments, Daichi was genuinely lost again, but then the hand from before was suddenly back in his face, outstretched and welcoming. "Kuroo Tetsurou. It's nice to meet you, fellow classmate."
Admittedly, Daichi was still very much confused, namely over how friendly a guy whose ass he had kicked not long ago could be. At this point, however, Daichi decided, he would be stupid to turn away the hand that was offered to him. Slowly, he reached forward and shook Kuroo's hand.
"Sawamura Daichi." He replied even more slowly, half expected Kuroo to yank him out of his desk by his hand and offer him to his fanclub of their classmates as a sacrifice. But he knows deep down that he's being ridiculous for even thinking that.
The U.A Heroics course was a goddamn mess, but maybe - just maybe - Daichi would have an ally much sooner than expected.
