"Hold still."
Kageyama hissed as Kozume none too gently placed his hand on the chest wound, his palm glowing a soft reddish-pink. Shoyo, the tiny crow familiar that usually perched on his master's staff, was now sat on top of Kageyama's head, flapping his wings and squawking worriedly.
Kozume shushed him. "He's fine, Shoyo. A bit emotionally constipated, but fine."
Kageyama squawked indignantly. "What'd you say?" He snarled, ensnaring Kozume's wrist in one hand.
Kozume didn't flinch at Kageyama's outburst. He calmly beckoned to Shoyo with a nod, waiting patiently while Shoyo's tiny wings trembled in his effort to fly. When Shoyo was finally safe on his head, Kenma proceeded to slam his staff on top of Kageyama's own.
Kageyama cried out, releasing Kozume's wrist as his hands flew to his head. "Ow, fuck! What the hell was that for?"
Kozume stared at him blankly, rubbing his previously captured wrist. "I'm not sure what exactly you do where you come from," he mumbled softly. "But in this land we don't really grab the wrist of the mage that's trying to heal you. We don't usually piss them off either."
Kageyama growled, but gulped internally, his anger already sizzling out. Despite Kozume's frail appearance, he was one of the most powerful mages in existence. There was also the fact that he was older than Kageyama was, which meant he'd just blatantly harmed and disrespected a senior.
"I.. I'm sorry, Kozume..." he murmured, his voice so quiet he could barely hear himself. "I didn't mean to do that."
Kozume hummed thoughtfully. "The guilt inside you is strong. Why? Because of Iwaizumi?"
Kageyama grit his teeth and turned his head so he wouldn't have to see Kozume's knowing eyes. The wound of what happened two days ago was still fresh in his heart.
"I was weak." He muttered bitterly, the anger sharp in his voice. "I hesitated, and Iwaizumi picked up my slack. That's why he got taken, he was too worried about me to focus properly..."
Kozume tilted his head and hummed again. "What happened two days ago was no one's fault but the Demon King's, Kageyama. You forget that even though you are strong and powerful, you're still a kid, we all are. Kids can get frightened, they're allowed to be scared." He bounced his staff gently off Kageyama's head again. "And we both know Iwaizumi would rather himself get taken then you killed."
Kageyama sighed, defeated. "I know, Kozume, I'm just worried. We've fought the Demon King before, we know how powerful he is, and Iwaizumi is just one man."
Kozume chuckled. "Kageyama, Iwaizumi is the strongest person on this team, second to me." He paused, twirling his staff absentmindedly before his lips stretched into a sly smile. "Actually, he would be the first if I didn't have my magic. He's our leader for a reason, and you are his second in command for a reason. You know what to do, don't you?"
Kageyama silently glanced up at the sky, his gaze determined. After a few heartbeats, he spoke. "Yes," he said firmly. "Yes, I know exactly what to do."
Kozume's smile widened and his eyes narrowed in victory. Shoyo chirped excitedly from his place on Kozume's head, his tiny wings flapping. Kozume lightly tapped Kageyama's head with his staff, then gestured to the middle of their camp, where Aone was meditating and Hinata was practicing his sword work.
"Then go on, Kageyama. Lead your people. Show them what to do."
